MANKATO, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State received a pair of tremendous pitching performances, but the Mustang offense was able to muster just one run in two games, as Minnesota State swept a doubleheader from SMSU on Saturday, winning 2-0 in game one, before using a walk-off home run in the 11
th inning in game two to earn a 2-1 victory.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Alumni Field in Marshall starting at 1:30 p.m.

MSU has now won 13 straight games and improves to 17-4 overall, 12-0 NSIC. SMSU drops to 7-11 overall, 2-6 NSIC.

In the nightcap, SMSU struck first in the opening frame as
Tanner Strommen coaxed a two-out walk and later scored on an RBI single by
Shane Sellner.

MSU would tie the score with a single run in the third inning.

The game would remained tied until the bottom of the 11
th when MSU's Josh Wenzel belted a solo home run off SMSU relief pitcher
Chase Meyer. It is the second walk-off home run versus SMSU this season.

SMSU finished with just eight hits in game two, but had several chances to take the lead late in the contest. The Mustangs left 13 runners on base, including runners in scoring position in the ninth, 10
th and 11
th innings. The Mustangs left the bases loaded in the 11
th inning.

SMSU freshman starter
Jeremy Stouffer was solid, tossing 6 2/3 innings, giving up one run on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Mustang relief pitchers
Jared Tschetter and
Shawn Williams combined to pitch 3 1/3 shutout innings and did not allow a hit.

Cole VanderBeek and Strommen both finished with two hits, while Strommen,
Derek Branson and
Liam Lopez all recorded a pair of walks.

In game one, MSU starter Brody Rodning threw a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the season.

SMSU starter,
Erik Thorvilson (0-3), was the tough-luck loser, tossing 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on two hits. Â

MSU a scoreless game in the fourth inning with a two-out solo home run. The Mavericks then added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

VanderBeek, Strommen and Lopez recorded SMSU's three hits.

The Mustangs left six runners on base in the final four innings, including putting runners at second and third with one out in both the fourth and sixth innings, but failed to score.
