Errors costly in game two as BSU earns sweep over SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Bemidji State snapped a 5-5 game in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring nine runs—eight unearned—in earning a 14-5 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in game two and complete a doubleheader sweep in college baseball on Friday.
 
Logan Riedel tossed a complete game seven-hitter to lead BSU to a 5-1 victory in game one. BSU scored 12 unearned runs in the nightcap to complete the sweep.
 
The two games were slated to be played in Bemidji, but were relocated due to poor weather in northern Minnesota. The two clubs will complete the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at Alumni Field.
 
In game one, BSU opened the scoring in the third inning using a pair of hits and an SMSU throwing error to take a 1-0 lead.
 
BSU added to the lead in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Scott Litchy and later scored another run on a passed ball to push the margin to 3-0.
 
The Beavers made the score 5-0 in the sixth on a two-run double by Collin Eckman.
 
SMSU snapped its 20-inning scoreless streak in the top of the seventh inning as Jayden Fleck ripped an RBI double to left centerfield.
 
Fleck finished the game 2 for 4 with an RBI. SMSU closed the game batting 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position.  
 
Riedel (3-4) recorded his first complete game of the season recording seven strikeouts and two walks.
 
Justin Clark (1-6) took the loss after pitching 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks.  
 
SMSU opened the scoring in game two in the top of the first frame. Brady Lanoue and Tanner Stommen singled, before Derek Branson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following a strikeout, Fleck was hit by a pitch to bring in the game's first run.
 
SMSU added to the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Cole VanderBeek to score Ben Heichel.
 
BSU answered back in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of an SMSU fielding error to score three runs and take a 3-2 lead. BSU's Duane Miller belted a solo home run with two outs in the frame to put the Beavers in front.
 
Another home run—this one by Logan Riedel—to lead off the bottom of the fifth pushed the BSU advantage to 4-2.
 
BSU scored another unearned run in the sixth to take a 5-2, before SMSU rallied in the eighth.
 
With one out, Liam Lopez reached on a BSU error, before Ben Heichel advanced Lopez to second. Kody Larson followed with a run-scoring single to trim the deficit to 5-3. Following a wild pitch to move both runners up and a fly out for the second out of the inning, Lanoue came through with a clutch two-run single to tie the game at 5-5.
 
The game was not tied for long as BSU came right back with a nine-run inning to seal the victory. The Beavers collected six hits and took advantage of two Mustangs errors to score eight unearned runs.
 
Shawn Williams (2-2), the third of five SMSU pitchers in the contest, suffered the loss allowing four hits and six runs (one earned).
 
Cole Petersen started for SMSU and lasted 5 2/3 innings, giving up five runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
 
The SMSU offense in game two was led by Heichel, who finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored, while Lanoue and Larson each added two hits.
 
SMSU finished with a 10-9 hit advantage in game two.
