Alex O'Connor (6-6) pitched five innings giving up seven hits and five runs total, but was in the circle for all three unearned runs from Northern State.
The Wolves put up one run in the second and third innings and doubled its lead in the top of the fourth. The Mustangs strung two hits and a walk together in the bottom of the sixth but only managed just one run as SMSU left two runners on base in the inning.
Tori Brooks went 1 for 3 in game one extending her hitting streak to five straight while
Taylor Koloc also went 1 for 3 with one RBI. Koloc extended her on base streak to six straight with her RBI double that also scored the Mustangs only run of the contest.
Game 2 Box Score
Game 2
As the wind picked up at Mustang Field, so too did the Mustangs' defensive mishaps in a 6-2 loss in game two as
Shelby Crank suffered her fourth loss of the year despite giving up just two earned runs in her complete game effort.
Tori Brooks extended her hitting streak to six straight after finishing 1 for 4 at the plate.
Kaylee Hentges went 1 for 2 from the dish after entering the game at shortstop in the top half of the fifth.
Crank (2-4) threw over a hundred pitches in her seven full innings, striking out five batters and keeping the Mustangs within one run after giving up four errors through the first four innings.
SMSU finished with seven runners left on base during the game but also left eight runners from Northern State stranded on base.
Trailing by six runs going into the bottom of the seventh, SMSU strung several hits together in a late rally as Hentges singled to right to score the first run of the game for the Mustangs. Tori Brooks and
Emma Grote followed up with base hits of their own as Grote scored the second run for the Mustangs.Â
The Mustangs' deficit was too much to overcome however as a pop up into the wind ended the late rally attempt.
SMSU will now host MSU Moorhead tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
