Mustangs bounce back with doubleheader sweep of MSU Moorhead

MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State recovered from a day in which it committed a combined nine errors with back-to-back errorless games in a doubleheader sweep of MSU Moorhead winning game one, 5-2 and dominating game two with an 8-0 win by run rule in five innings in game two.

SMSU scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning after falling behind early and rode a complete game pitching effort from Alex O'Connor to a 5-2 victory in game one.

Tori Brooks went 1 for 4 with two RBI to extend her current hitting streak to seven games. Emma Grote was 1 for 2 with two RBI as the Mustangs outhit MSU Moorhead 7-4.

O'Connor pitched a complete game giving up just four hits with four strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs.

MSU Moorhead got off to a quick start on offense with a lead off double to start the game. The Dragons doubled their lead with another single and a grounder to take a 2-0 lead after the game's first half inning.

The Mustangs managed just one hit in the first but came back with four hits and four runs in the bottom of the second to take back the lead. Madison Krog and Karmann Carroll led off the second with back-to-back singles before a Kaylee Hentges walked to load the bases with zero outs. Tori Brooks then hit a two RBI single to center to extend her hitting streak and put the Mustangs ahead.

O'Connor gave up just one more hit in the final five innings while the Mustangs added one more run off of Emma Grote's second RBI of the day.

Shelby Crank gave up just three hits to the Dragons and SMSU continued to score runs in big spurts to help SMSU to an 8-0 win by run rule in five innings in game two.

Mackenzie Clouse went a perfect 3 for 3 from the plate tying the Mustangs' season high with four RBI that included two extra base hits. Abbie Decker went 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Taylor Koloc went 1 for 3 with two RBI and one run scored in game two.

After a scoreless first inning, Sam Flack reached base on a hit by pitch and was later driven in by a Karmann Carroll single to left.

The Mustangs loaded the bases to begin the third off of a walk, an error, and an Abbie Decker single. Taylor Koloc then got the inning rolling with a single to left that scored Tori Brooks and Emma Grote. After Sam Flack was hit by a pitch for the second time on the day, Mackenzie Clouse hit her first double of the day to give the Mustangs its 10th inning of the year with at least four runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Flack hit an RBI single to left for her first RBI of the game and later came around to score when Clouse hit a two RBI double for the second consecutive inning.

The Dragons saw their chances fade with a three up, three down top of the fifth to end the game as Shelby Crank forced two ground outs and a strikeout to cap off her complete her third complete game of the season.

SMSU will now cap off its eight-game home stand on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Augustana beginning at 2 p.m.
