TOPEKA, Kan.- Southwest Minnesota State surrendered three goals in each half as No. 14 Fort Hays State defeated the Mustangs, 6-0 to begin the 2017 season.

The Tigers got the scoring started off of a set piece with a redirected corner kick that found the net in just the sixth minute of play to make it a 1-0 game.

FHSU then scored two more goals in less than seven total minutes to extend its lead to 3-0, a lead which the Tigers would carry into the halftime break.

The Mustangs would fall behind 4-0 less than eight minutes into the second half and midfielder, Eden Stoddard grabber her second goal of the game in the 66th minute to push the lead to 5-0.

SMSU's scoring opportunities were scarce as the Mustangs had just four total shots with just one shot on goal testing the Tigers' goalkeepers.

Sophomore Jessica Craigmile played all 90 minutes between the posts for SMSU grabbing three total saves on the night while Kristen Thompson and Megan Kneefel split time in the shutout win for Fort Hays State.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Washburn (Kan.) at 11 a.m.
