NSU slips past SMSU with second half goal

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Northern State snapped a 1-1 tie with an early second half goal to earn a 2-1 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer on Saturday at the Schwan Regional Center.
 
NSU (3-1, 2-0 NSIC) broke the tie with a goal from Nicole Griffith from 25 yards out in the 47th minute.
 
NSU opened the scoring in the sixth minute as Stephany Estrada scored her first of the season to give the Wolves an early advantage.
 
SMSU (0-4, 0-2 NSIC) finally broke free in the 14th minute as Fabiana Peiro scored off a perfect pass from Amanda Hartmann to tie the score at 1-1. It was the first goal for SMSU this season.
 
NSU goalkeeper Justin Charles earned the victory making four saves.
 
SMSU goalkeeper Jessica Craigmile recorded three saves.
 
SMSU had nine shots in the game while NSU finished with 13 shots. Hartmann had four shots for SMSU with one on goal while teammate Kelli Wentz added a pair of shots on goal.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will continue its homestand tomorrow facing MSU Moorhead (0-2-2, 0-1-1 NSIC) at 1 p.m.
