MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State grabbed its first lead in any half with a 20th minute goal but MSU Moorhead quickly equalized and found the net twice in the second half to steal a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
Emily Huddleston gave the Mustangs their first lead of the season with her first goal of the season in the 20
th minute.
SMSU showed strong build up play in stringing several passes together that ended with Huddleston taking on a defender one on one and placing the game opening goal into the bottom left corner of the net.
Just over five minutes following the Mustangs' goal, MSU Moorhead answered back off of a free kick in the 26
th minute. Kylee Billings took a free kick from about thirty-five yards out on the right side of the field which was then headed past
Jessica Craigmile to even the match at 1-1.
SMSU again found quality build up play early in the second half but it was the Dragons that broke the 1-1 tie when Jenai DeNardo took advantage of an untimely turnover on the Mustangs' back line. DeNardo took one touch after forcing the turnover and placed the ball in the bottom right corner of Craigmile's net to give MSU Moorhead a 2-1 advantage.
The Mustangs applied pressure in waves after conceding the second goal as SMSU would finish with a 7-6 advantage in second half shots but close chances fell by the way side. SMSU finished with four shots on goal in the second half and held a 14-12 advantage in total shots for the match.
With SMSU unable to pull back even, MSU Moorhead put the game away when Lindsey Brownell put a header off of a 83rd minute corner into the Mustangs' net for a second Dragons' goal off of a set piece.
The Mustangs will return to action on Friday when they travel to face Concordia-St. Paul beginning at 7 p.m. SMSU will return home next Sunday to play Minnesota State at 1 p.m.
