ST. PAUL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State surrendered a crushing 83rd minute go-ahead goal from Concordia-St. Paul in what would finish a 2-1 loss on Friday night at Sea Foam Stadium.
The Mustangs responded almost immediately after giving up an early goal on the road, but were unable to breakthrough the rest of the match as SMSU continued to battle for its first win of the year.
SMSU responded in its immediate possesion that followed a 10th minute, Concordia goal that came from within the Mustangs' penalty area.
The Mustangs took the ensuing kick after th CSP goal and strung several passes through the midfield.
Amanda Hartmann found her second assist of the season as she lofted a ball behind the Golden Bears' defenders and onto the feet of
Alli Miskowiec who then tucked the ball past Concordia goalkeeper, Jordyn Clark, for the equalizer. The goal was Miskowiec's first of the season.
After facing nine first half shots, the Mustangs turned to freshman goalkeeper,
Jenna Meyer in the second half. Meyer had five saves in the second half and helped fend off a series of late attacks but couldn't maintain the second half shutout as Concordia's late goal spoiled her Mustang debut.
Concordia-St. Paul was credited with 22 total shots to the Mustangs eight. The Golden Bears hit the target 13 total times forcing five saves from each of the Mustangs' goalkeepers.
SMSU will return to Marshall and prepare to face No. 14 Minnesota State this Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
