Mustangs drop home NSIC match to No. 14 MSU

Box Score

MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State held No. 14 Minnesota State to one goal in the first half, but conceded four times in the second as MSU came away with a 5-0 win on Sunday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center.

Freshman goalkeeper, Jenna Meyer, made her first career start in net for the Mustangs after making her Mustang debut on Friday night at Concordia-St. Paul.

Meyer conceded one goal off of a deflection in the 18th minute but was able to make nine total saves on the afternoon as Minnesota State continually put the SMSU back line under pressure. Several crucial first half saves from Meyer kept the match tight as Minnesota State held just a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Minnesota State came out with a quick goal after halftime to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead and added a third goal in the 68th minute as Lauren Kizlik dribbled through the Mustangs' defense and buried a shot past Meyer.

SMSU struggled to put many runs together in the second half as they were faced with attacking into a strong headwind. The Mustangs only managed two second half shots while the Mavericks put up 14 shots on goal and 35 total shots in the match.

The Mustangs gave up two late goals as they suffered a seventh straight loss to begin the 2017 season.

SMSU will be on the road next weekend as they face U-Mary and Minot State on Friday and Sunday respectively.
