LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Southwest Minnesota State University women's volleyball team (10-0, 2-0 NSIC) tops the latest AVCA Top-25 Coaches' Poll that was released on Monday, earning the No. 1 ranking for a second straight week.
SMSU has now defeated top-25 teams in its last six matches after wins over No. 9 Augustana and No. 17 Wayne State last week to open NSIC play. The Mustangs have started the season a perfect 7-0 against ranked opponents.
The Mustangs are the top team in the nation after beginning the year at No. 2 in the first two polls. SMSU defeated the previous number one, Concordia-St. Paul, this past Saturday in the Colorado Premier Championship.
Southwest Minnesota State held the No. 1 ranking for four straight weeks back in 2012, the last time prior to this year that SMSU held the top spot in the rankings.
The Mustangs garnered 47 total first-place votes this week to fall just one vote shy of a unanimous No. 1 ranking.
No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul took the remaining first-place vote in this week's poll and is one of the four total NSIC schools ranked in the Top 10. No. 6 Minnesota Duluth moved up one spot while No. 9 Winona State moves into the top-10 for the first time this season.
No. 12 Augustana moves down three spots after an 0-2 weekend, No. 18 Wayne State, and No. 19 Northern State made it seven total NSIC teams in the top-25.
The Mustangs have now been ranked in the Top 25 for 151 consecutive polls, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006, and have made it into the Top 10 for 55 consecutive polls.
Southwest Minnesota State's 10-match win streak to open the season is the best start in program history.
SMSU will continue conference play with an early week road trip to Sioux Falls on Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m.
The Mustangs will return to the road over the weekend as they travel to face Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston on Friday and Saturday respectively.
