Mustangs still perfect after Friday night sweep over Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn.- Top ranked Southwest Minnesota State (12-0, 4-0 NSIC) volleyball held Bemidji State (3-9, 0-4) to just 24 kills and a .039 attack percentage in a 25-13, 25-8, 25-22 sweep on Friday night in the BSU Gymnasium.

The No. 1 team in the nation had it's best attack percentage (.450) of the season as SMSU lost just 20 total points and had 31 kills as a team in the first two sets.

Sarina Smith had 10 kills on just 15 total attacks and one error (.600) while Taylor Reiss led the team with 11 kills on just 21 swings to lead the Mustangs.

SMSU finished with a .450 attack percentage and Megan Larson had 32 of the Mustangs' 38 assists while also adding five kills on just six attacks (.833).

SMSU held two Bemidji State players to negative attack percentages and kept the Beavers at a .000 attack percentage through the entire first and second sets.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 13-7 lead in set one and then went on an 11-4 run that included four Bemidji State attack errors to take a 19-8 lead.

Following a pair of SMSU attack errors that spurred a short Beavers' run, Head Coach Terry Culhane took a timeout that was followed by a 6-1 Mustangs' run to help the Mustangs finish off the first set, 25-13.

SMSU came out even faster in the second set as the Mustangs raced to a 14-2 advantage. Sarina Smith and Kaylee Burmeister each had a pair of kills during the run while Megan Larson added two assists and a kill during the quick start.

With the exception of a small handful of plays, the Mustangs were unstoppable in the second set as they never trailed in a 25-8 win to earn the 2-0 lead. SMSU would finish with 16 kills and a .560 attack percentage in game two.

SMSU was the beneficiary of seven attack errors in the third set while the Mustangs had its lowest attack percentage of .345  to force a tight set with the score at 18-18. 

BSU continued to struggle on offense however as SMSU put away its twelfth straight win to begin the season with a 25-22 win in the third set.

SMSU has now won 24 straight matches over Bemidji State and has lost only one set in the past eight matches.

The Mustangs will travel to play at Minnesota Crookston tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
