No. 1 SMSU sweeps second straight match to improve to 13-0

CROOKSTON, Minn.- No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State (13-0, 5-0 NSIC) held Minnesota Crookston (4-9, 1-4 NSIC) to a .039 attack percentage and swept a second straight match with a 25-9, 25-20, 25-20 sweep on Saturday afternoon in the Lysaker Gymnasium.

Brooke Borchardt had a career high 16 kills to lead the Mustangs and finished with a .667 attack percentage, her second consecutive match hitting over .600.

Taylor Reiss finished with 15 kills and six digs while the Mustangs' other outside hitter, Kaylee Burmeister, finished with nine kills and 11 digs.

Erin Corrigan contributed 14 digs while libero, Dani Potter, led the team with 15 digs in the win. Setter, Megan Larson, had 45 assists while adding four kills and nine digs for SMSU.

SMSU went on a 6-0 run off of the first serve of the match and jumped ahead 12-2 in the opening minutes. The Mustangs dominated the opening set of the match as they held the Golden Eagles to just three kills and a -.069 hitting percentage. Conversely, SMSU was able to put up 19 kills on just 30 attacks with four errors (.500) as the Mustangs cruised to a 25-9 win in game one.

Taylor Reiss, Kaylee Burmeister, and Brooke Borchardt combined for 16 kills and Megan Larson tallied 17 assists in a second set that was close early before the Mustangs eventually pulled away to win 25-20, going ahead in the match 2-0 in the process.

Borchardt was subbed back into the match with the Mustangs ahead 9-6 in set three and quickly put up three kills and a block assist to help SMSU carve out a 14-8 lead. The flurry was just the beginning of what would prove to be a 12-7 run that gave SMSU a 21-13 lead, forcing a Crookston timeout.

Reiss, Burmeister, and Borchardt then combined for the final four points of the match to give SMSU a second straight sweep. The 13th straight win to open the 2017 season is the fourth longest win streak in school history for Southwest Minnesota State. SMSU has swept four of the last five matches against Minnesota Crookston and has now won 23 straight matches against the Golden Eagles overall.

The 2-0 weekend ends a run of 12 of 13 road/ neutral matches to open the season for SMSU. The Mustangs went a perfect 5-0 in true road matches during the stretch and also finished with a 7-0 record against the AVCA Top-25. 

The Mustangs will now return to Marshall as they get set to host Homecoming/ Alumni Weekend next Friday and Saturday in the PE Gym.

SMSU will take on St. Cloud State on Friday night at 6 p.m., followed by an afternoon match against No. 6 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m.
