Dragons pull away late to stifle SMSU comeback

MOORHEAD, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State came storming back from a 19-point deficit to get within four points late at MSU Moorhead, but SMSU went scoreless over the final six minutes in a 66-51 loss on Friday night in the Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Caleigh Rodning led the Mustangs in scoring for the seventh time this season with 10 points while Sadie Stelter and Erin Baxter each had nine.

SMSU was up and down offensively throughout the night, shooting a combined 46 percent (13 of 28) in the second and third quarters and a combined 26 percent (6 of 23) in the first and fourth quarters.

Drew Sannes of MSU Moorhead put up 20 points on 9 of 14 shooting as the Dragons shot 42 percent as a team on the night.

The Dragons held a 39-34 rebounding advantage on the night and pulled in 12 offensive rebounds as a team.

MSU Moorhead took advantage of the Mustangs' slow start on offense, jumping out to a 19 point lead with three minutes to play in the second quarter.

SMSU came out of the break strong as Abuk Akoi had eight points in the third quarter to help SMSU to a 10-4 advantage in points in the paint to begin the second half. 

SMSU went 7 of 16 from the field during the third quarter to cut the MSU Moorhead lead to just ten at 51-41 heading into the fourth.

Sadie Stelter hit a layup to cut the MSU Moorhead lead to 53-49 during the early stages of the fourth quarter. The basket would prove to be the final Mustangs' field goal of the night however, as MSU Moorhead pulled away to a 66-51 win, keeping SMSU scoreless over the final 6:01.

SMSU will return to action tomorrow afternoon as it wraps up the weekend at Northern State beginning at 4 p.m.
