Mustang wheelchair basketball goes 1-3 in opening weekend

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team opened the 2018-19 season this past week winning one of four games at a triangular held at the R/A Facility.
 
On Friday, SMSU opened with a 72-63 loss to Nebraska-Omaha, before suffering a 90-53 setback to Wisconsin-Whitewater.
 
In the loss to UNO, Walter Johnson, in his first action in over a year, poured in 36 points on 17 of 30 shooting. He also had six assists and two rebounds. Ryan Kile, Chauncey Wulf and Ezekiel Ramudzi all added nine points.
 
SMSU shot 50 percent (29 of 58) from the field, while UNO shot 60 percent (30 of 50).
 
In the setback to UWW on Friday, the Warhawks shot 76 percent (38 of 50) from the field. SMSU shot 48 percent in the game with Kyle Blake leading the way with 14 points on 7 of 9 shooting, while Johnson chipped in with 13 points.
 
On Saturday morning, SMSU rebounded with a 61-48 victory over UNO as Johnson poured in 23 points, while Wulf added 11 points. Ramudzi (8), Blake (8) and Kile (6) also added to the victory with the Mustangs shooting 47 percent (27 of 58).
 
SMSU closed the weekend with an 89-40 loss to UWW as the team was held to 33 percent (15 of 46) shooting. Johnson led the Mustangs with 17 points with three 3-pointers.
 
Southwest Minnesota State returns to the court on Nov. 16-17 with four games at the UW-Whitewater Tournament.
