Fast start leads MSU past SMSU on Friday afternoon

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Minnesota State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in defeating Southwest Minnesota State 9-1 on Friday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
 
MSU (8-1-1, 6-0-1 NSIC) scored in the ninth minute and then added goals in the 15th and 20th minute to build a 3-0 lead. The Mavericks, which had 14 shots in the opening half, added two more goals in the final eight minutes of the half to build a 5-0 halftime lead.
 
MSU would eventually push the advantage to 9-0, before SMSU's Alli Miskowiec scored her fifth goal of the season off a pass from Emily Hofmann in the 80th minute for the game's final score.
 
SMSU (3-7, 3-5 NSIC) closed the game with 10 shots, including five on goal. MSU had 23 shots in the contest with 14 goal. MSU held an 11-0 advantage on corner kicks.
 
Jenna Meyer started in goal for SMSU and finished with five saves.
 
Southwest Minnesota State continues Homecoming weekend on Sunday facing Concordia-St. Paul starting at 1 p.m. at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
