SMSU hosts North Central in a mid-week contest

    PREVIEWING THIS WEEK
The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball (2-2) plays a mid-week game against North Central Tuesday, Nov. 20 in the R/A Facility. 
•After Tuesday's game, SMSU then has 11 days off before the conference opener at home. 

    SMSU QUICK HITS
•SMSU head coach Tom Webb earned his 100th career win as a Division II head coach on Friday night with SMSU's 91-83 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside.
•SMSU went 2-0 in the inaugural Ramada Classic this past weekend. 
•Mustangs host the next four games before heading back on the road on Dec. 14 at St. Cloud State. 
•SMSU opens conference play on Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m. against Sioux Falls. 
•SMSU was slated at 12th overall in the conference in the preseason poll and seventh in the South Division.

    NSIC PRESEASON COACHES POLL 
•SMSU was slated to finish 12th overall in the NSIC Preseason Poll and seventh in the NSIC South Division. 
•Sioux Falls was chosen as the overall favorite with 208 points and nine first place votes and 47 votes to earn the top-spot in the South Division. 

    RODNING: NSIC "PLAYER TO WATCH"
•Junior forward, Caleigh Rodning, was named an NSIC "Player to Watch" entering into the 2018-19 season. 
•Rodning appeared in 51 games with 38 starts in her two-year career. 
•She shot 58% from the free throw line last season, ranking third in team history. She ranks fourth in team history with 82.5% free throw percentage.
•She averages 7.6 rebounds per game, to rank sixth in team history. 
•All-NSIC in 2017-18, led the team in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (7.5). 
•Season-high 26 points against Bemidji State on Jan. 13, 2016. 
•Led the first two matches of the 2018-19 season with 41 points in first two contests.

    SCOUTING NORTH CENTRAL
•North Central is 2-1 coming into Tuesday's game against SMSU. 
•North Central is a part of the UMAC and a Division III school. 
•Head coach Paul Brunner is in his fourth season as head coach. 
•Haleigh Filer leads the Rams with a 13.7 ppg average and 41 points recorded this season. 
•Filer leads in assists with 10 and steals with five. 
•Allison Bulthuis leads in 3-pointers with eight this season and a .308 avg (8 of 26) from beyond the arc. 
•Naomi Hagstrom has the most free throws made with 12 and a .632 avg (12 of 19). 
•Hagstrom also leads in rebounds with 27 total and a 9.0 avg. 


    SERIES HISTORY VS. NORTH CENTRAL
•SMSU and North Central have met once in the series history on Feb. 19, 2008, with a 116-42 Mustang victory in the R/A Facility.

    ABOUT SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE 
•SMSU is 2-2 on the season following an undefeated weekend hosting the inaugural Ramada Classic. 
•Junior forward Caleigh Rodning is averaging a team-high 23.0  ppg and a team-high 9.5 rpg.  
•Sophomore guard Erin Baxter is  averaging 12.0 ppg. 
•Sophomore guard Sadie Stelter is averaging 10.0 ppg with six 3-pointers. 
•SMSU is shooting 38 percent from the field, 38 percent from 3-point range, 77 percent from the free throw line and is minus-3.7 in rebound margin. 
•SMSU is averaging 76.8 points per game, while opponents are averaging 80.8 points per game. 

    SMSU SETS TEAM-RECORD 19 3-POINTERS 
•In SMSU's victory over William Jewell (Mo.) on Saturday, the Mustangs set a new team-record of 19 3-pointers scored in a game. 
• The previous record was 15 against Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 19, 2008.
•SMSU scored 11 3-pointers in the first half, eight of which came out of the second quarter. 
Erin Baxter had five, Caleigh Rodning, Meleah Reinhart, and Jenna Borchers all added three, Sadie Stelter and Sarah Buysse each added two and Emily Buysse pitched in one to total the new-record of 19. 

    BACK-TO-BACK WINS
•SMSU earned its first back-to-back wins since the 2015-16 season. 
•The wins occurred on Jan. 30, 2016, and Feb. 5, 2016 at Minnesota Duluth and against Bemidji State. 

    SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
Tom Webb is in his third season as head coach with an 10-47 record. 
•Webb saw improvement from his first season of a 3-24 in 2016-17, to a record of 5-21 in 2017-18. 
•Webb is 101-170 in his 11th season as head coach at the Division II level. He compiled a record of 91-123 as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.) 
•Webb reached his 100th career win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    CLOSE ONES
•In the 2017-18 season, SMSU came within one points shy of victories five times. 
•SMSU fell short to Wayne State on Dec. 2, 2017, with a final score of 68-66. 
•Mustangs dropped one to Minnesota Crookston on Jan. 12 with a final score of 65-61.
•SMSU and Concordia-St. Paul went to overtime in a 97-94 loss. The Mustangs recorded 33 points in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. 
•On Feb. 16, 2018, Minnesota State and SMSU played to a 56-53 Mustang loss. 
•In their second match up of the 2017-18 season, CSP and SMSU played a close game with a 70-68 CSP victory. 

    NEW FACES
•The Mustangs welcome four new players to the 2018-19 roster. 
•Forward Morgan Frank transfers from North Iowa Area Community College where she played all 33 games with 14 starts in 2017-18.She averaged 5.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. She scored double figures in five games. Frank set out her first season with an injury. 
•Freshman guard Jenna Borchers is a 2018 graduate of Dallas Center-Grimes where she was a four-year letter winner and all-conference recipient. She was named second team all-state, all-district, and all-region in her four-year tenure under coach Adam Jones. 
•Freshman guard, Oliva Drummer, from St. Clair, Minn. scored more than 1,000 points and was a three-time all-conference recipient. 
•Freshman forward  Lily Schoknecht is a 2018 graduate of Anoka HS. She was a member of the 2016 state tournament team and named all-conference averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per game. 
    
    RODNING ALL-NSIC IN 2017-18
•Rodning was the lone Mustang to earn All-NSIC conference honors. 
•Rodning was named to the second all-NSIC team.

    MELEAH REINHART NOTES

•Shot 85 percent from the free throw line in 2017-18. 
•Ranks third in team history with her 85 percent in single season (2017-18). 
•Ranks fourth in team history with 82.5 free throw pct.
•Averaged 7.6 rebounds to rank sixth in team history.
