Women's basketball heads on the road to open 2018-19 season at the NSIC/MIAA Challenge

PREVIEWING THIS WEEKEND
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball
team opens the 2018-19 season in Hays, Kan. at the MIAA/NSIC
Challenge this weekend.
•SMSU will face Fort Hays State (Kan.) for a 7 p.m. tip off to open
the challenge on Friday.
•The competition closes with a 5:30 p.m. tip off against Missouri
Western State on Saturday.

QUICK HITS
•SMSU will open its home schedule against Wisconsin-Parkside on
Nov. 16 at 6 p.m., before opening NSIC play on Dec. 1 versus Sioux
Falls in the R/A Facility.
•SMSU concluded the 2017-18 season at 5-21 and 4-18 in the conference.
•Tom Webb begins his third season as the Mustangs head coach.
•SMSU was slated at 12th overall in the conference in the preseason
poll and seventh in the South Division.

MIAA/NSIC CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT
•The MIAA/NSIC Challenge tournament consists of Missouri Western
State and Fort Hays State.
•SMSU has played in the MIAA/NSIC Challenge for the past three
consecutive years after hosting the first year.
NSIC PRESEASON COACHES POLL
•SMSU was slated to finish 12th overall in the NSIC Preseason Poll
and seventh in the NSIC South Division.
•Sioux Falls was chosen as the overall favorite with 208 points and
nine first place votes and 47 votes to earn the top-spot in the South
Division.
RODNING: NSIC "PLAYER TO WATCH"
•Junior forward, Caleigh Rodning, was named an NSIC "Player to
Watch" entering into the 2018-19 season.
•Rodning appeared in 51 games with 38 starts in her two-year career.
•She shot 58% from the free throw line last season, ranking third in
team history. She ranks fourth in team history with 82.5% free throw
percentage.
•She averages 7.6 rebounds per game, to rank sixth in team history.
•All-NSIC in 2017-18, led the team in scoring (12.8) and rebounding
(7.5).
•Season-high 26 points against Bemidji State on Jan. 13, 2016.

SCOUTING FORT HAYS STATE
•Fort Hays State dropped a pair of exhibition matches with a 90-83
loss in overtime to Kansas and a 48-46 loss to Kansas State.
•Lanie Page lead the exhibition match against Kansas with 21 points.
•Tatyana Legette grabbed 10 rebounds in the first exhibition match
of the season. Legette lead in the exhibition match against Kansas
State with a double-double 14 points and 11 rebounds. she went 4-
6 at the free thing and 2-4 around the arc.
•FHSU is ranked 12th in the WBCA national poll.
•Fort Hays State returns 11 letterwinners from last year's squad that
won 26 games, third-most in program history. Included in that group
of returners are four All-MIAA performers in Legette, Carly Heim,
Kacey Kennett and Page.

SERIES HISTORY VS. FORT HAYS STATE
•Southwest Minnesota State and Fort Hays State meet for the third
time with Fort Hays State going undefeated 3-0.
•The two teams first met on Nov. 11, 2015 and have the past three
years.
•The series opened up in Marshall with a 71-34 Fort Hays victory.

SCOUTING MISSOURI WESTERN STATE
•Missouri Western State opened the exhibition season with a 70-
48 loss to the University of Missouri.
•Katrina Roenfeldt led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds.
•Seventh-year MWSU head coach Rob Edmisson will look to mold
nine returners with six newcomers. The list of returners includes
2017-18 MIAA honorable mention selections Melia Richardson,
Dossou Ndiaye and Cera Ledbetter. Richardson posted career-high
numbers last season while Ndiaye and Ledbetter combined to give
the Griffons a lethal combination in the post.

SERIES HISTORY VS. MISSOURI WESTERN STATE
•Southwest Minnesota State and Missouri Western meet for the
sixth time with Missouri Western leading 5-1.
•The teams' first contest took place in 1995 in which the Mustangs
earned their first and only victory of the series, 65-62, at the North
Dakota State Tournament.

SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
•Tom Webb, enters his third season at SMSU as head coach with an
8-45 record.
•Webb saw improvement from his first season of a 3-24 overall
record to last years 5-21.
•Webb is 99-168 in his nine year career as a DII head coach.
•Webbs's complete bio is found on page 14.

CLOSE ONES
•In the 2017-18 season, SMSU came within one points shy of victories
five times.
•SMSU fell short to Wayne State on Dec. 2, 2017, with a final score
of 68-66.
•Mustangs dropped one to Minnesota Crookston on Jan. 12 with a
final score of 65-61.
•SMSU and Concordia-St. Paul went to overtime in a 97-94 loss. The
Mustangs recorded 33 points in the fourth quarter to send the game
to overtime.
•On Feb. 16, 2018, Minnesota State and SMSU played to a 56-53
Mustang loss.
•In their second matchup of the 2017-18 season, CSP and SMSU
played a close game with a 70-68 CSP victory.

ABOUT SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
•SMSU returns 10 letter winners and one senior. The 2017-18 season
included seven true seniors.
•Caleigh Rodning returns after earning All-NSIC second team last
season and earned NSIC All-Freshman team with 14 starts as a true
freshman.
•Rodning ranks third in team history after shooting 85% from the
free throw line last season.
•She ranks fourth in team history with a 82.5 free throw pct. and
sixth in team history with a 7.6 rebounds per game avg.
•SMSU's 2017-18 roster included seven true freshmen who contributed
greatly.
•Erin Baxter started all games and ranked second in scoring with
10.8 ppg.
•Sadie Stelter played significant minutes and ranked third in ppg
with 8.3.

NEW FACES
•The Mustangs welcome four new faces to the 2018-19 roster.
•Forward Morgan Frank transfers from North Iowa Area Community
College where she played all 33 games with 14 starts in 2017-18.She
averaged 5.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. She scored double
figures in five games. Frank set out her first season with an injury.
•Freshman guard Jenna Borchers is a 2018 graduate of Dallas Center-
Grimes where she was a four-year letter winner and all-conference
recipient. She was named second team all-state, all-district,
and all-region in her four-year tenure under coach Adam Jones.
•Freshman guard, Oliva Drummer, from St. Clair, Minn. scored more
than 1,000 points and was a three-time all-conference recipient.
•Freshman forward Lily Schoknecht is a 2018 graduate of Anoka
HS. She was a member of the 2016 state tournament team and
named all-conference averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per
game.

RODNING: ALL-NSIC
•Rodning was the lone Mustang to earn All-NSIC conference honors.
•Rodning was named to the second all-NSIC team.
•She ranks in the all-time career records in four categories.

MUSTANG 20-POINT GAMES
•Southwest Minnesota State has three players who scored over 20
pointslastseason.
•Caleigh Rodning earned a season-best 26 points against Bemidji
State on Jan. 13, 2018.
