COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team split four games this past weekend at the University of Missouri Tournament.
SMSU opened play on Friday with a 65-61 victory over Nebraska-Omaha, before losing to UT Arlington by a score of 84-56. On Saturday, SMSU once again defeated Omaha 69-56, before closing the weekend with a tough 63-60 loss to Missouri
SMSU is now 4-8 overall on the season and will return to action in January.
In the Mustangs' first win over Omaha on Friday,
Walter Johnson had a monster game, scoring 31 points on 15 of 29 shooting with eight rebounds and three assists.
Ryan Kile grabbed eight rebounds and scored eight points, while
Chauncey Wulf added 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting.
In the loss to UTA, Johnson made 14 of 21 field goals and scored 34 points, but UTA shot 77 percent from the field in earing the victory.
In Saturday's win over Omaha, Johnson poured in 32 points on 14 of 20 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Kile added 21 points, connecting on 10 of 11 from the field. The Mustangs closed the game shooting 59 percent from the field.
In the setback to Missouri, Johnson made three 3-pointers and scored 23 points, while Kile added 17 points, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs attempted just one free throw in the game.
Southwest Minnesota State returns to the court on Jan. 11-12, 2019, competing at the Nebraska-Omaha Tournament.
