SMSU hosts MSU and CSP this weekend to end six-game homestand

    PREVIEWING THIS WEEKEND
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (3-3, 0-1 NSIC) hosts Minnesota State (4-1, 1-0 NSIC) on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Concordia-St. Paul (4-2, 0-1 NSIC) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the R/A Facility.

    SMSU QUICK HITS
•SMSU had its first three-game winning streak since the 2011-12 season came to an end on Dec. 1 with the conference loss to USF.
•SMSU head coach Tom Webb earned his 100th career win as a Division II head coach on Nov. 16  with SMSU's 91-83 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside.

•Friday's game will be broadcast live regionally on Midco Sports Network.

    SCOUTING MINNESOTA STATE    
•MSU was picked to finish ninth overall in the NSIC preseason poll. 
•Head coach, Emilee Thiesse, is in her seventh season as head coach. Thiesse has compiled a 180-109 record. 
•MSU is shooting 43 percent from the field (145 of 338) and 36 percent from the 3-point line (32 of 89). 
•Taylor Drost leads the team in scoring averaging 10.8 ppg. 
•Rachel Schumski leads the team in rebounding averaging 5.2 rpg. 
•Monica Muth leads the team in assists with 24. 
•Brooke Tonsfeldt leads the team in blocks and steals with five and 15 respectively. 
•MSU is recording a +17.5 scoring margin and a +2.8 rebounding margin. 

    SERIES HISTORY VS. MINNESOTA STATE
•MSU leads the all-time series 41-17 which began in the 1970-71 season.  
•SMSU has lost the last 23 games.  
•The last time SMSU won was in the 2004-05 season with a 74-61 victory at Marshall in the SMSU Classic. 
•The last meeting was on Feb. 2, 2018 with a 56-53 MSU victory.

     SCOUTING CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
•CSP was picked to finish second in the NSIC overall preseason coaches' poll. 
•Senior Anna Schmitt was chosen as the South Division's Preseason Player of the Year. 
•Head coach, Amanda Johnson, is in her third full season as  head coach. 
•Schmitt ranks third in all-time scoring at CSP. 
•Last season, Schmitt ranked second in the conference while leading the team with 19.4 points per game. 
•Schmitt scored 10+ points in 26 of 29 games in 2017-18, scoring 15 or more 22 times. 
•Lindsay Dorr leads the team in scoring with 20.8 ppg. She has led the team in scoring in all but one game.
•Kyrah Fredenburg leads the team in rebounds with 9.3 followed by Dorr with 9.2.
•Lexi Lee leads the team in assists with 15 this season and a 2.5 average. 
•Dorr and Fredeburg tie the team-high three blocks this season.
•CSP is shooting 41 percent from the field (152 of 373) and 27 percent from the 3-point line (29 of 106). 
•CSP is recording a +5.0 scoring margin and a +2.8 rebounding margin. 
    SERIES HISTORY VS.  CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
•CSP leads the all-time serires 37-16, which dates back to the 1974-75 season.
•SMSU's largest winning streak was 12 games from 1986-2002.
•CSP has won 33 of the last 35 games. 
•The last time SMSU won was on Dec. 10, 2011, with a 60-55 victory in Marshall.
•The last meeting went into overtime with a 97-94 CSP victory in St. Paul, Minn. 
•CSP leads the record in the R/A Facility 14-8.

    ABOUT SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE 
•SMSU is 3-3 and 0-1 after the conference opener 69-51 loss to conference favorite, Sioux Falls.
•Saturday's loss ended SMSU's first three-game winning streak since the 2011-12 season.
•Junior forward Caleigh Rodning is averaging a team-high 18.2  ppg and a team-high 8.8 rpg.  
•Rodning was chosen as NSIC South Division Player of the Week, announced on Nov. 19.
Jenna Borchers, Erin Baxter, and Rodning all tie for a team-high 11 assists recorded this season. 
•Baxter also leads in steals with nine this season and a 1.5 steals per game average.
•SMSU is shooting 38 percent from the field and 34 percent from the 3-point line. 
•SMSU is averaging 74.7 points per game, while opponents    are averaging 72.0 points per game. 
•SMSU is recording a +2.8 scoring margin and a -1.7 rebounding margin. 

    SMSU SETS TEAM-RECORD 19 3-POINTERS 
•In SMSU's victory over William Jewell (Mo.) on Nov. 17,  the Mustangs set a new team-record of 19 3-pointers made in a game. 
• The previous record was 15 against Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 19, 2008.
•SMSU made 11 3-pointers in the first half, eight of which came in the second quarter. 
Erin Baxter had five, Caleigh Rodning, Meleah Reinhart, and Jenna Borchers all added three, Sadie Stelter and Sarah Buysse each added two and Emily Buysse pitched in one to total the new-record of 19. 

    THREE CONSECUTIVE WINS
•SMSU ended its first three-game winning streak since the 2011-12 season on Dec. 1 against USF. 
•SMSU earned its first back-to-back wins since the 2015-16 season after defeating Wisconsin-Parkside and William Jewell (Mo.) in the inaugural Ramada Classic on Nov. 16-17.
•SMSU's last two-game winning streak occurred on Jan. 30 and Feb. 5, 2016, at Minnesota Duluth and at Bemidji State.
•SMSU's last four-game winning streak came during the 2009-10 season when the team won six straight.  
•SMSU is currently over the .500 mark for the first time since opening the 2013-14 season with two victories. 

    90-POINT GAMES
•The Mustangs have scored 90 of more points in all three victories. 
•The last time SMSU scored 90 or more points in three consecutive games was in November 2008 with a 111-75 victory over Chadron State (Neb.), 107-45 victory over Mayville State (ND), and a 93-75 victory over Mount Mercy (Iowa).

    RODNING: NSIC SOUTH DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•Junior forward, Caleigh Rodning, was named an NSIC South Division Player of the Week on Nov. 19. 
•This is the first time Rodning has received this award and the first Mustang to earn the award under head coach, Tom Webb.  
•Totaled 51 points in SMSU's back-to-back victories hosting Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) and William Jewell (90-67) in its inaugural Ramada Classic. 
•In the two victories, Rodning recorded back-to-back double-doubles with 34 points and 16 rebounds against Wisconsin-Parkside, followed by 17 points and 10 rebounds against William Jewell.
•Rodning shot 59 percent from the field (16 of 27), 67 percent from beyond the arc (6 of 9), and went 13-15 from the free throw line throughout the weekend. 
 •Rodning ranks sixth in rebounding average with 7.8 and fourth in free throw percentage with .830 in the all-time school record book. 

    NCAA STATISTICAL RANKINGS 
•SMSU ranks 11th nationally in three-points made per game (9.8).

    NSIC STATISTICAL RANKINGS
•SMSU ranks second in the conference in free throw attempts (115), three-point field goals attempted (151), made (56), and 3s per game (11.2).
Caleigh Rodning leads the conference in free throws made (35) and free-throw percentage (94.7%).
•Ranks second in double-doubles with three. 
•Second in free throw attempts (37) and three-point field-goal percentage (56%).

    SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
Tom Webb is in his third season as head coach with an 11-48 record. 
•Webb saw improvement from his first season of a 3-24 in 2016-17, to a record of 5-21 in 2017-18. 
•Webb is 102-171 in his 11th season as head coach at the Division II level. He compiled a record of 91-123 as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.) 
•Webb reached his 100th career win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    RODNING ALL-NSIC IN 2017-18
Caleigh Rodning was the lone Mustang to earn All-NSIC honors last season as she was named second team.

•Stelter has started all games this season with a 23.2 average in minutes. 
•Averaging 4.3 rpg and 9.7 ppg.
•Earned one-point shy of her career-high 19 points in the 2018-19 season opener against Fort Hays State (18).
•Recorded three games with double figure scoring with 12 and 10 against UWP and WJC in the Ramada Classic, and 12 against North Central. 
•Tied for second in steals (5) with Meleah Reinhart.
•Stelter added two 3-pointers in SMSU's team-high 19 against WJC. 

    CALEIGH RODNING NOTES 
•2018-19 NSIC "Player to Watch." 
•NSIC South Division Player of the Week on Nov. 19, 2018.
•Leading the team in minutes (25.3), field goals made (30), 3-pointers made (14), free-throws made (35), rebounds (53), tied in assists (11), and ppg (18.2). 
•Averaging 8.8 rpg and tied with Erin Baxter and Jenna Borchers in assists with 11.  
•Three consecutive games with double-doubles (34 points and 16 rebounds against Wisconsin-Parkside, 17 points and 10 rebounds against William Jewel, and 12 points and 10 rebounds against North Central).
•All-NSIC second team in 2017-18. 
•Shot 85 percent from the free throw line last season to rank third in team single-season history. 
•Ranks third in team history with 83.4 free throw pct.
•Averaging 7.9 rpg to rank sixth in team history.

    EMILY BUYSSE NOTES 
•Averaging 1.3 ppg in 2018-19 season.
•Added one 3-pointer in SMSU's 19 team-high on Nov. 17 to total five points.

•Played in all 24 games in 2017-18. 

     SARA TESKE NOTES
•Earned her first career start against Missouri Western on Nov. 10, 2018. 
•Earned her first double-double against Wisconsin-Parkside on Nov. 16 with 11 points and 13 rebounds to set a career-high points and rebounds.
•Averaging 20.5 minutes, 5.8 ppg and 5.8 rpg. 
•Ranks second on the team with 5.8 rpg. 
•Had three steals against North Central.

    SARAH BUYSSE NOTES 
•Was 3 of 6 beyond the arc in the opening weekend of the 2018-19 season. 
•Went 2 of 3 from the 3-point line against William Jewell. 
•Recorded her first double-figure scoring game of the season with 11 against Wisconsin-Parkside. 
•Averaging 19.6 minutes, 6.6 ppg and 3.0 rpg.
•Two-time Academic All-NSIC with 26 games played and 16 starts in 2017-18. 

    MATEYA HUTTON NOTES 
•Played in 24 games as a true freshman in 2017-18.
•Averaging 15 minutes, 3.0 rpg and 2.4 ppg.
•Tied her career-high with six rebounds against North Central on Nov. 20.
•Appeared in five games this season. 
•Missed the conference opener with an injury. 

    ERIN BAXTER NOTES
•Ranks third in minutes averaged with 23.3 and points per game with 11.2
•Led the team with 21 points against William Jewell in her first 20-point game of the season. 
•Went 5 of 6 beyond in the arc against WJC.
•Leads the team in steals with nine. 
•Career-high 25 points against Concordia-St. Paul on Jan. 19, 2018.
•Led the 2017-18  team with 34 steals. 

    ABUK AKOI NOTES
•Returned to the court after missing the last four games with an injury against USF on Dec. 1. 
•Averaging 6.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, and 19.5 minutes. 
•Played in all 26 games as a true freshman. 
•Recorded 49 blocked shots in 2017-18 to rank seventh in single-season team history. 
•Led the team with 49 blocked shots. 
•Tied program single-game record with seven blocked shots vs UMary on Feb. 3, 2018. 
 
    MORGAN FRANK NOTES
•Made her first appearance as a Mustang against Wisconsin-Parkside. 
•Grabbed two boards in her first appearance. 
•Added one free throw, one rebound, one assist, and one block in her minutes against William Jewell. 
•Averages 8.5 minutes, 2.0 points and 2.8 rebounds. 
•Scored a career-high seven points against North Central where she recorded six rebounds.

    TAYLOR BONESTROO NOTES
•Scored two points against William Jewell. 
•Appeared in five of the first six games this season. 
•Averaging 6.2 minutes per game.  
•Played in 17 games as a true freshman..  

    JENNA BORCHERS NOTES
•Has appeared in all six games as a true freshman. 
•Averaging 23.2 minutes with 4.2 ppg and 1.2 rpg. 
•Tied her season-high nine points against William Jewell (Mo.) and again against North Central.
•Ties Caleigh Rodning and Erin Baxter in assists with 11. 

    HOME AND AWAY     
•SMSU lost its first game at home in 2018-19 season in the conference opener against USF on Dec. 1. 
•SMSU is 0-2 in road/neutral site games this season after finishing 1-13 in away/neutral games last season.
