Mustangs' shooters lead SMSU to fourth straight win

WAYNE, Neb.- Southwest Minnesota State hit 10 3-pointers and Carter Kirk dominated inside with his 12th double-double of the season as SMSU defeated, Wayne State 75-60 on Friday night in the Rice Auditorium.

KJ Davis tied for the team lead with 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting while Taylor Schafer went 4 of 7 from deep and finished with 16 points as well.

Ryan Bruggeman had a down night scoring the ball, but consistently found his perimeter shooters and finished with a career high 12 assists on the night.

Turner Moen added 10 points on the offensive end for SMSU and Carter Kirk had 15 points and 13 rebounds for his 19th career double-double.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the game 48 percent (28 of 59) from the field as a team including 10 of 23 (44 percent) on 3-pointers.  The Mustangs also went 90 percent (9 of 10) at the free throw line in the win.

Wayne State had three players reach double figures but shot just 39 percent (22 of 57) from the floor as a unit.

The Mustangs jumped ahead early, racing to a 16-4 lead in the first 5:21 of the game.  KJ Davis put up 12 points in the first 20 minutes, going 5 of 6 shooting in the first half while Kirk finished with nine first-half rebounds.

SMSU had seven offensive boards in the first half to help the Mustangs to a 10-point halftime lead.

The Mustangs continued to put pressure on the Wildcats' defense in the second half, shooting 5 of 8 (63 percent) from deep and 15 of 26 (58 percent) overall in the second half.

WSC was unable to keep up with the Mustangs' fire power as SMSU led by as many as 24 points in the second half on its way to closing out the regular season sweep of Wayne State.

SMSU will return to action with its final road NSIC contest of the season tomorrow evening at Augustana beginning at 6 p.m.
