MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State was never able to recover from a string of five losses to start the match as Minnesota State came away with a 27-6 win on Friday night in the PE Gym.
SMSU dropped several tight decisions to open the match as Minnesota State jumped ahead 19-0 after its hot start.
The Mavericks captured a win by fall in the 197 weight class to begin the night which was followed by a sudden victory decision in the 285 bout.
MSU earned a major decision at 133 and Louie Sanders handed
Trent Butcher a tough loss by way of a 12-10 decision.
Justin Haneke put the Mustangs on the board for the first time with a 6-4 win at 149 over No. 11 Kyle Rathman of Minnesota State.
Cortez Arredondo then dropped a 4-2 decision to Daniel Close as the Mavericks pushed their lead to 22-3.
Kegen Fingalsen earned a 6-3 win by decision at 165 but No. 7 Zach Johnson gave MSU another win in the 174 weight class.
The Mavericks' highest ranked wrestler, No. 6 Corey Abernathy, defeated
Cole Hennen 3-0 at 184 to conclude the dual.
Southwest Minnesota State will travel for its final dual of the season tomorrow afternoon, taking on MSU Moorhead at 3 p.m.
