Mustangs close Arizona with loss to nationally ranked Jamestown

TUCSON, Ariz. –
The Southwest Minnesota State baseball wrapped-up its 10-game spring trip to Arizona on Sunday morning with a 2-1 loss to the University of Jamestown (N.D.), at the Kino Sports Complex.
 
SMSU finishes the week-long trip with a 5-5 record. Jamestown, ranked No. 16 in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll, improves to 14-1 overall.
 
UJ starting pitcher Jerome Byndloss was outstanding, firing seven shutout innings, allowing three hits, while recording 10 strikeouts.
 
The Jimmies snapped a scoreless game in the sixth inning with a two-out rally. With two outs, Jamestown put together four straight hits to score a run and then added another on a wild pitch to build a 2-0 advantage.
 
SMSU was able to break through in the bottom of the ninth as Derek Smith started the frame with a hit by pitch, before moving to third base following a pair of ground outs. Shane Sellner cut the lead in half with an RBI single, but Jayden Fleck popped out to end the game and close SMSU's three-game winning streak.  
 
Jeremy Stouffer starting on the mound for SMSU and pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Chase Meyer tossed 1 1/3 innings of relief and also allowed one run on four hits. Alex Jorgensen fired two shutout innings with two strikeouts.
 
Smith finished the game with two of SMSU's five hits.
 
Sellner ended the week for SMSU batting a team-high .462 with four doubles, one home run and 10 RBIs. Fleck hit .289 and clubbed four home runs—including a pair of grand slams—and added three doubles and 19 RBIs.
 
Southwest Minnesota State is scheduled to open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play next weekend with a four-game, home-and-home series with Minnesota State (5-4). Weather and field conditions could force the series to be relocated.
