CROOKSTON, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State right-hander
Justin Clark tossed a two-hit shutout with a career-high 14 strikeouts to lead the Mustangs to a 9-0 victory over Minnesota Crookston in game one of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday. UMC bounced back in game two, limiting SMSU to just three hits, to earn a 7-1 victory.

The two teams concluded the four-game series on Sunday with a twinbill starting at 12 p.m.

In game one, Clark (2-4) was in complete control as he recorded his first career shutout. He allowed just two singles in the game, while walking a pair of batters, and did not allow UMC runner to reach third base.

SMSU (12-22, 7-17 NSIC) started the scoring in the first inning as
Nathan Kuhn doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Mustangs scored two more runs in the third as
Jake Hendricks hit a run-scoring single and then later scored on a fielding error by UMC (20-26, 6-20 NSIC) following a single by
Jayden Fleck.

SMSU put the game away with a four-run fifth, which included five hits and a pair of UMC errors. Fleck and
Spencer Franko each had RBI singles in the inning.

Ben Heichel and
Derek Smith each collected RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings respectively to cap SMSU's scoring.

Fleck finished the game 3 for 4 two a pair of runs scored. Hendrick also scored two runs and had a pair of hits. Heichel, Franko and Kuhn also all recorded a pair of hits, as the Mustangs finished with 13 in the game.

In game two, UMC scored a pair of first inning runs, before SMSU answered in the second on a sac fly by Mark Bezdicek to make the score 2-1.

UMC pushed across a run in the third to make the score 3-1 and it remained a two-run game until the seventh when the Golden Eagles scored three runs and then added another in the eighth to seal the victory.

John Bezdieck (2-4) pitched the first six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk to suffer the loss for SMSU.

Hendricks had two hits for the Mustangs, while Fleck finished with one.
