DENVER, Colo. – No. 8 Southwest Minnesota State (3-2) defeated Colorado Christian (2-4) this afternoon in a five-set match at the Colorado Premier Challenge at Regis University. SMSU won the first two sets before CCU rallied to take the next two to force the match into the fifth set. The Mustangs pulled ahead to take a 12-3 lead in the fifth that would help win the match (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 15-7). The Mustangs are now 1-1 in five-set matches this season. The two teams were tied 33 times and had 11 lead changes throughout the five-set match.
In the end, CCU couldn't keep up with a strong Mustang offense.
Taylor Reiss had a match-high 21 kills along with five blocks and 14 digs.
Angela Young recorded 14 kills in her second consecutive game with double-digit kills. Young topped her previous career-high of 11 kills against Wheeling Jesuit last week to make a new career-high 14 kills.
The Mustangs hit a collective .267 with three players in double digit kills with 12 kills from
Sarina Smith.
Kaylee Burmeister also added 14 digs as libero on today's match.
Colorado Christian is now 2-2 in this season for five-set matches as they continue pool play against Saint Leo at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. The Mustangs will take on Saint Leo tonight at 7 p.m. to determine the bracket for Saturday's play.
