FAYETTE, Iowa – The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team concluded its season-opening weekend with a 4-1 loss to Fort Hays State (Kan.) on Saturday at Pattison Field on the campus of Upper Iowa University.
FHSU (1-1) opened the game's scoring in the 25
th minute behind a goal from Chloe Montano.
The Tigers pushed the lead to 2-0 early in the second half on a goal by Cailey Perkins in the 60
th minute.
SMSU (0-2) cut the deficit in half moments later as
Morgan Darner scored off a header following a corner kick from
Kelli Wentz in the 62
nd minute make the score 2-1.
FHSU answered back in the 73
rd minute on Montano's second goal of the game to extend the lead to 3-1, before Montano recorded the hat trick in the final minute for the game's final margin.
Jessica Craigmile started in goal for SMSU and made four saves.
SMSU, which had five corner kicks, finished the game with eight shots, including five on goal.
Alli Miskowiec had three shots with one on goal, while Darner finished with a pair of shots on goal.
FHSU closed the game with 13 shots with eight on goal and had four corner kicks.
Southwest Minnesota State will return to action on Friday, Sept. 7, to open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play at the University of Sioux Falls starting at 5 p.m.
