MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State volleyball rallied after going down in the first set for a 3-1 victory (25-21, 26-24, 28-26, 25-9) over Upper Iowa on Saturday afternoon in the PE Gym.
SMSU (9-4, 4-1) was led by
Taylor Reiss who recorded a match-high 33 kills with a .333 hitting percentage to defeat UIU (8-5, 1-4).
Kaylee Burmeister led the Mustang defense with 17 digs. Also adding digs for the Mustangs was
Erin Corrigan (16),
Sydney Omtvedt (12), and Reiss (11) to aid the Mustangs total 80 digs in the match.
Emma Thomssen recorded 55 assists and eight digs in the match.
The Mustangs recorded a total team 10 blocks led by
Meg Schmidt with four block assists and two block solos.
UIU was led offensively by Anna Winter with 18 kills. Lauren Wombles and Kaitlin Niedert each added 10 and 11 kills respectively. Haley Weepie dished out a match-high 29 digs, and Malissa LaClaire, recorded 40 assists.
The Mustangs went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-11 lead late in the first set, capsulated by five errors from the Peacocks and two kills from Reiss. The Peacocks rallied to tie the set at 20-20 to eventually take the lead. The Peacocks pulled ahead after three kills from Lauren Wombles to end the set with a Peacock victory.
Late in the second set, the Peacocks earned a 23-22 lead, before
Taylor Reiss contributed four kills in the final points to lead the Mustangs to a 26-24 victory.
In set three, the Peacocks led for the majority until the Mustangs could tie the score at 23 punctuated by a kill from Reiss. The teams traded off points until the Mustangs eventually took the set finished by a kill from
Angela Young with the final score of 28-26.
Mustangs took a 14-8 lead in the fourth set before Burmeister went for 12 consecutive serves to take the Mustangs to a 25-9 victory. 10 of Reiss's 33 kills came late in the fourth set to finish the match.
The Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team travels to Minnesota State on Friday, Sept. 21 for a 6 p.m. match at the Taylor Center.
