Mustangs win a pair of games in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team finished 2-2 this past weekend at the Nebraska-Omaha Tournament.
 
On Friday, the Mustangs split a pair of games, losing to UT-Arlington, 62-49, before earning a 71-57 victory over Nebraska-Omaha.
 
In the loss to UTA, Ryan Kile poured in a team-high 21 points on 10 of 17 shooting, while Walter Johnson chipped in with 12 points which included connecting on two 3-pointers and grabbed 10 rebounds. Ezekiel Ramudzi added nine points on 4 of 7 shooting.        
 
Johnson scored 21 points and added seven assists and seven rebounds in the Friday win over Omaha. Johnson was one of four Mustangs to score in double figures as Kile added 19 points on 9 of 12 shooting, while Jesus Villa (11) and Chauncey Wulf (10) both scored five field goals. Villa also recorded a team-high nine rebounds. The Mustangs closed the game shooting 63 percent (33 of 56) from the field.
 
On Saturday, the Mustangs lost 79-55 to Wisconsin-Whitewater despite a team-high 27 points and 16 rebounds from Johnson, who finished the game making 11 of 20 shots from the field with three 3-pointers. Villa connected on a pair of 3-pointers and finished the game with 16 points. Ramudzi added seven points with a pair of field goals and two free throws.
 
SMSU closed the weekend with a 79-64 win over Omaha on Saturday afternoon. Johnson connected on 12 of 23 from the field for 33 points and also grabbed nine rebounds. Villa pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and scored 21 points with seven field goals. He also made 6 of 7 from the free throw line. Ramudzi added nine points, while making 5 of 6 from the charity stripe. The Mustangs shot 49 percent from the field, but earned the victory from the foul line, making 20 of 27 free throws.
 
SMSU is now 6-10 overall and will have two weeks off before hosting two games on Jan. 26. The Mustangs take on the Rolling Timberwolves at 3 p.m. before taking on Sioux Falls at 6 p.m. with both games in the PE Gym.
