SMSU hosts UMC and BSU in weekend games

    PREVIEWING THIS WEEKEND
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (9-10, 6-8 NSIC) hosts Minnesota Crookston (10-10, 5-9 NSIC) and Bemidji State  (5-13, 3-11 NSIC) for weekend homestand, including the annual "Hawaiian Night."

    SMSU QUICK HITS
•Saturday's victory over Upper Iowa marks the ninth victory for SMSU this season. It's the first time SMSU has earned nine victories in a season since the 2009-10 season. 
Meleah Reinhart led both games this weekend and has led for the past five games.  

    BROADCAST INFO 
•Both games will be broadcast on 105.1 FM KARL.
•Friday's game against Minnesota Crookston will be broadcast on Midco Network.

    SERIES HISTORY VS. MINNESOTA CROOKSTON
•SMSU leads the all-time series 20-12 since the first meeting 
in the 1996-97 season.
•SMSU holds a slight 9-7 advantage in games played in Marshall. 
•This weekend is the first meeting between the teams this season. 
•SMSU opened the series winning the first 12 games. 
•SMSU has lost five of the last six games. 
•The Mustangs' last victory was on Jan. 13, 2017, in Crookston with a 75-66 final.

    SERIES HISTORY VS. BEMIDJI STATE
•SMSU leads the all-time series at 41-34 dating back to 1977-78.
•SMSU holds a 24-12 advantage in games played in Marshall. 
•This weekend is the first meeting between the teams this season. 
•The teams have traded victories since Feb. 17, 2012. 
•SMSU won the last meeting on Jan. 13, 2018, with a 84-70 victory in Marshall.

    ABOUT SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE 
•Junior forward Caleigh Rodning is averaging a team-high 13.3 ppg and a team-high 7.1 rpg.
•Sophomore guard Meleah Reinhart is averaging a team second-best 12.2 ppg and hand is tied for a team-high 30 3-pointers. 
•Sophomore guard Sadie Stelter ties for a team-high 30 3-pointers  and leads in assists with 39. Stelter averages 10.5 ppg. 
•Sophomore guard Erin Baxter is averaging 8.9 ppg.
•SMSU is shooting 39 percent from the field, 32 percent from the 3-point line, 77 percent from the free throw line and is minus-2.0 rebound margin. 
•SMSU is averaging 71.1 points per game.

    SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
Tom Webb is in his third season as head coach with a 17-55 record, including 13-45 in NSIC play. 
•SMSU finished 3-24 during his first season in 2016-17, before improving to 5-21 in 2017-18. 
•Webb is 106-176 overall in his 11th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 91-123 in nine seasons as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.) 
•Webb recorded his 100th career win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    SMSU SETS TEAM-RECORD 19 3-POINTERS 
•In SMSU's victory over William Jewell (Mo.) on Nov. 17,  the Mustangs set a single-game record of 19 3-pointers made and also a school record for most three-point attempts (34) in a game. 
•The previous record was 15 made against Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 19, 2008.
•SMSU made 11 3-pointers in the first half, eight of which came in the second quarter. 

     THREE CONSECUTIVE WINS
•SMSU's three-game winning streak earlier this season was the program's first since the 2011-12 season. 
•SMSU earned its first back-to-back wins since the 2015-16 season after defeating Wisconsin-Parkside and William Jewell (Mo.) at the Ramada Classic on Nov. 16-17.
•SMSU's last four-game winning streak came during the 2009-10 season when the team won six straight.  

    NINE SEASON VICTORIES
•Saturday's victory over Upper Iowa marked the ninth victory this season for the Mustangs, the first time SMSU earned nine victories since the 2009-10 season. 

    90-POINT GAMES
•The Mustangs scored 90 of more points in three straight victories earlier this season.
•The last time SMSU scored 90 or more points in three consecutive games was in November 2008 with a 111-75 victory over Chadron State (Neb.), 107-45 victory over Mayville State (ND), and a 93-75 victory over Mount Mercy (Iowa).

    SCOUTING MINNESOTA CROOKSTON    
•Minnesota Crookston is 10-10 overall and 5-9 in NSIC play 
•Minnesota Crookston was swept last weekend, falling to UMary and Minot State.
•Senior forward Isieoma Odor moved to fifth in all-time school history scoring at Minnesota Crookston and leads the team in scoring with a 18.2 ppg and 7.2 rpg. 
•Freshman guard Kylie Post averages a team-high 2.2 apg. 
•Minnesota Crookston is shooting 41 percent from the field and 33 percent from the 3-point line.
•UMC is recording a minus-3.4 rebounding margin and a minus -1.6 scoring margin. 
•Head coach, Mike Roysland, is in his 13th season and has 123 wins. 

    SCOUTING BEMIDJI STATE    
•Bemidji State is 5-13 overall and 3-11 in the NSIC.
•BSU split last weekend with a loss in overtime to Minot 
State and a victory over UMary.
•BSU broke a 12-game losing streak on Jan. 18 with a victory over Upper Iowa. 
•Brooklyn Bachman leads the team in scoring with 10.0 ppg. 
•Taylor Bray averages 4.6 rpg for a team-high.
•Trinity Myer averages a team high 2.5 apg. 
•BSU is shooting 39 percent from the field, 30 percent from the 3-point range, 67 percent from the free throw line and is  minus-7.4 in rebound margin. 
•BSU is averaging 60.7 points per game, while opponents are averaging 68.2 points per game.
•Head coach, Chelsea DeVille, is in her fourth season with a 21-76 record. 







    RODNING EARNS NSIC WEEKLY AWARD
•Junior forward Caleigh Rodning was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week on Nov. 19. 
•It's the first time Rodning has received this award and is 
the first Mustang to earn the honor under head coach Tom Webb.  
•In two SMSU victories, Rodning recorded back-to-back double-doubles with 34 points and 16 rebounds against Wisconsin-Parkside, followed by 17 points and 10 rebounds against William Jewell.
•Rodning shot 59 percent from the field (16 of 27), 67 percent from beyond the arc (6 of 9), and went 13-15 from the free throw line throughout the weekend. 

    NCAA STATISTICAL RANKINGS 
•The latest NCAA statistics (through Jan. 29 are located on page 19.
Caleigh Rodning ranks 22nd in free throw pct. and 69th in free throws made.
Meleah Reinhart 48th in free-throw percentage.
•SMSU ranks 11th in free throw pct. and 18th three-point field goals made. 

    NSIC STATISTICAL RANKINGS
•The latest NSIC statistics (conference games only) are located on pages 17-18. 
•SMSU leads the conference in three throw pct. with 78.4 .•Abuk Akoi ranks fifth blocked shots and 11th in steals.
Sadie Stelter ranks 13th in 3-pointers made with 17. 
Meleah Reinhart ranks sixth in free throw pct., fourth in 3-point percentage, and 12th in steals.
Caleigh Rodning ranks seventh in free throw pct.

    RODNING ALL-NSIC IN 2017-18
Caleigh Rodning was the lone Mustang to earn All-NSIC honors last season as she was named second team. 

    SMSU ALL-TIME IN THE NSIC 
•The 2018-19 campaign marks the 40th season SMSU has competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. 
•SMSU has an all-time record of 233-377 in conference games and have won four regular season championships (1979-80, 1980-81, 2000-01, 2001-02) and one NSIC Tournament championship (2002). 

    MUSTANG HISTORY
•Southwest Minnesota State is competing in its 50th season of women's basketball in 2018-19.
•SMSU has played 1,246 games compiling an all-time record of 593-657. 
•SMSU has recorded 26 winning seasons, but has not had  a winning season since the 2009-10 team finished 15-12.
