SMSU faces Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State on the road for second meeting

    PREVIEWING THIS WEEKEND
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (6-7, 3-5) travels to Concordia-St. Paul (9-4, 5-3 NSIC) on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. tip off and Minnesota State  (5-7, 2-6 NSIC) on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. start time. 
•SMSU hosted CSP and MSU on Dec. 7-8 where SMSU split the weekend with a 74-73 victory over MSU and falling 66-63 to CSP.

    SMSU QUICK HITS
•SMSU's win at Sioux Falls on Dec. 30 snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Cougars dating back to 2013. 
•Freshman Jenna Borchers scored a career-high 13 points with three 3-pointers in the victory.
•SMSU broke a three-game losing streak against the conference favorite, Sioux Falls. 
•Borchers scored a game-winning 3-pointer against No. 22 Augustana on Jan. 4. 
•The victory over Augustana marked the first time SMSU has won six games in a season since 2011-12 season.

    SERIES HISTORY VS.  CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
•CSP leads the all-time series 38-16, which dates back to the 1974-75 season.
•SMSU's largest winning streak was 12 games from 1986-2002.
•CSP has won 34 of the last 36 games. 
•The last time SMSU won was on Dec. 10, 2011, with a 60-55 victory in Marshall.

    LAST TIME VS. CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
•CSP earned a 66-63 victory in Marshall earlier this season on Dec. 8.
•SMSU created 14 steals, six from Abuk Akoi
Caleigh Rodning scored a team-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Rodning was 9 of 19 from the field, 2 of 6 from beyond the arc, and 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
•Anna Schmitt led CSP with 26 points and five assists.

    SERIES HISTORY VS. MINNESOTA STATE
•MSU leads the all-time series 41-18 which began in the 1970-71 season.  
•SMSU broke a 23-game losing streak on Dec. 7 with a 74-73 victory at home.  
•The last time SMSU won, prior to this year, was in the 2004-05 season with a 74-61 victory at Marshall in the SMSU Classic.

    LAST TIME VS. MINNESOTA STATE
•SMSU broke a 23-game losing streak against MSU on Dec. 7 with a 74-73 victory.
Erin Baxter led the Mustangs with 19 points, while Meleah Reinhart pitched in 15 points, and 12 from Abuk Akoi.
•Rylee Menster led MSU with 12 points. 
•SMSU earned 50 points in the paint and had 36 off turnovers.

    ABOUT SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE 
•SMSU snapped a three-game losing streak last Sunday with a victory at Sioux Falls and is now 6-7 overall, 3-5 NSIC.   
•Junior forward Caleigh Rodning is averaging a team-high 15.1 ppg and a team-high 7.8 rpg. She also has connected on a team-high 20 3-pointers. 
•Sophomore guard Meleah Reinhart is averaging 10.4 ppg and has made 18 3-pointers. 
•Sophomore guard Sadie Stelter is averaging 9.8 ppg and has dished out a team-high 24 assists.
•Sophomore guard Erin Baxter is averaging 9.5 ppg while also leading the team with 17 steals. 
•SMSU is shooting 39 percent from the field, 31 percent from the 3-point line, 76 percent from the free throw line and is minus-2.3 rebounding margin. 
•SMSU is averaging 70 points per game and opponents are also averaging 70 points per game. 

    SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
Tom Webb is in his third season as head coach with a 14-52 record, including 7-41 in NSIC play. 
•SMSU finished 3-24 during his first season in 2016-17, before improving to 5-21 in 2017-18. 
•Webb is 104-174 overall in his 11th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 91-123 in nine seasons as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.) 
•Webb recorded his 100th career win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    SMSU SETS TEAM-RECORD 19 3-POINTERS 
•In SMSU's victory over William Jewell (Mo.) on Nov. 17,  the Mustangs set a single-game record of 19 3-pointers made and also a school record for most three-point attempts (34) in a game. 
•The previous record was 15 made against Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 19, 2008.
•SMSU made 11 3-pointers in the first half, eight of which came in the second quarter. 
 
    THREE CONSECUTIVE WINS
•SMSU's three-game winning streak earlier this season was the program's first since the 2011-12 season. 
•SMSU earned its first back-to-back wins since the 2015-16 season after defeating Wisconsin-Parkside and William Jewell (Mo.) at the Ramada Classic on Nov. 16-17.
•SMSU's last four-game winning streak came during the 2009-10 season when the team won six straight.  

    90-POINT GAMES
•The Mustangs scored 90 of more points in three straight victories earlier this season.
•The last time SMSU scored 90 or more points in three consecutive games was in November 2008 with a 111-75 victory over Chadron State (Neb.), 107-45 victory over Mayville State (ND), and a 93-75 victory over Mount Mercy (Iowa).

    SCOUTING CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL    
•Concordia-St.Paul is 9-4 overall and 5-3 in NSIC play.
•This weekend is the second meeting this season between the teams.  
•CSP was picked to finish second in the NSIC overall preseason coaches' poll. 
•Senior Anna Schmitt was chosen as the South Division's Preseason Player of the Year. 
•Schmitt ranks third in all-time scoring at CSP. 
•Lindsay Dorr leads the team in scoring with 17.7 ppg and rebounds with 10.1. Dorr also leads the conference in conference games with 10.6 rpg.
•Anna Schmitt leads the team in assists with 2.9 apg.  
•CSP is shooting 41 percent from the field and 31 percent from the 3-point line.
•CSP is recording a +6.2 scoring margin and a +2.8 rebounding margin.
•Head coach, Amanda Johnson, is in her third full season as  head coach. Johnson holds a 41-32 record and one appearance in the NSIC tournament where the Golden Bears reached the semifinals. 

    SCOUTING MINNESOTA STATE    
•MSU is 5-7 overall, 2-6 NSIC.
•The Mavericks are holding a four-game losing streak, with their last victory occurring on Dec. 15 with a 89-57 conference victory over Upper Iowa.   
•Taylor Drost is one of two Maverick players to average in double figure scoring with 11.1 ppg and Rachel Shumski is second on the team with 10.2 ppg.
•Brooke Tonsfeldt leds MSU with 7.2 rpg and Monica Muth leads in assists with 3.2 apg. 
•MSU is shooting 41 percent from the field, 36 percent from the 3-point range, 65 percent from the free throw line and is  plus-6.7 in rebound margin. 
•MSU is averaging 76 points per game, while opponents are averaging 70 points per game.
•Head coach, Emilee Thiesse, is in her seventh season as head coach. Thiesse has compiled a 181-116 record.

    RODNING EARNS NSIC WEEKLY AWARD
•Junior forward Caleigh Rodning was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week on Nov. 19. 
•It's the first time Rodning has received this award and is 
the first Mustang to earn the honor under head coach Tom Webb.  
•In two SMSU victories, Rodning recorded back-to-back double-doubles with 34 points and 16 rebounds against Wisconsin-Parkside, followed by 17 points and 10 rebounds against William Jewell.
•Rodning shot 59 percent from the field (16 of 27), 67 percent from beyond the arc (6 of 9), and went 13-15 from the free throw line throughout the weekend. 

    NCAA STATISTICAL RANKINGS 
•The latest NCAA statistics (through Jan. 8) are located on page 21.
Caleigh Rodning ranks 11th in free throw pct. and 51st in free throws made.
•SMSU ranks 31st in 3-point field goals per game, 17th in 3-point field goals attempts, 25th in free throw pct. and 32ndin 3-point field goals made. 

    NSIC STATISTICAL RANKINGS
•The latest NSIC statistics (conference games only) are located on pages 19-20. 
•SMSU ranks second in the conference in three throw pct. with 76.5 percent. 
Abuk Akoi ranks fifth in steals and blocked shots.
Caleigh Rodning ranks sixth in free throw pct. with 85 percent and 13th in rebounding with 6.8 rpg. 
Sadie Stelter ranks 13th in 3-pointers made with 13. 
Meleah Reinhart ranks 15th in free throw pct. with a 76 percentage.

    RODNING ALL-NSIC IN 2017-18
Caleigh Rodning was the lone Mustang to earn All-NSIC honors last season as she was named second team. 

    SMSU ALL-TIME IN THE NSIC 
•The 2018-19 campaign marks the 40th season SMSU has competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. 
•SMSU has an all-time record of 231-375 in conference games and have won four regular season championships (1979-80, 1980-81, 2000-01, 2001-02) and one NSIC Tournament championship (2002). 
 
    MUSTANG HISTORY
•Southwest Minnesota State is competing in its 50th season of women's basketball in 2018-19.
•SMSU has played 1,244 games compiling an all-time record of 590-654. 
•SMSU has recorded 26 winning seasons, but has not had  a winning season since the 2009-10 team finished 15-12.
