Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mustangs go 2-0 in weekend series capped by 2-1 win over the Huskies

Box Score

MARSHALL, Minn. -
After a thrilling victory in double-overtime on Friday, Southwest Minnesota State (8-6, 6-6 NSIC) returned to the field on Sunday with the same intense energy to earn a 2-1 victory over St. Cloud State (7-4-3, 6-3-2 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center.

SMSU hit the right moves at the right time to outscore SCSU despite a large shot advantage the Huskies held. SCSU attacked all 90-minutes to out-shoot SMSU, 22-to-6, and 12-to-3 in shots on goal.

SCSU's goalkeeper, Zoe Welsh, had only one save in the game while SMSU's Amanda Haimes was put to work with a career-high 11 saves to advance her record to 8-6 overall.

The Mustangs started the scoring off as Katie Oatman scored her first collegiate goal following a corner kick from Abbey Hoisington. The Huskies deflected the ball away from the net as Oatman recovered the pass and sent the ball through the crowd in the 15thminute.

The Mustangs then held a 1-0 lead as the Huskies committed a foul in the penalty box to give Olivia Harriger her fourth penalty kick attempt. Harriger, who is now 3-for-4, gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead with the PK goal in the 33rdminute.

The Huskies would also get a chance for a penalty kick as Kaitlyn Dziubinski scored a PK goal to go on the board in the 68thminute.

SCSU kept on strong offensively throughout the second half to try and tie up the game. Even with the minute clock winding down, the Mustangs defensive was able to put a spot the Huskies and maintain the upper-hand.

With only three games left of the regular season, the Mustangs travel to Winona State on Friday for a 6 p.m. game before returning home to face Upper Iowa at 1 p.m. on Sunday for senior day at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
