WINONA, Minn.– History was made on Friday night as the Southwest Minnesota State soccer team (9-6, 7-6 NSIC) defeated Winona State (7-9, 6-7 NSIC) for the first time ever in the all-time series dating back to 1996, with a 1-0 shutout victory at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Abbey Hoisington scored the game-winning goal, her fourth of the season, in the 63
rd minute as the Mustangs would gain a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs would hold on to this lead to record their third-straight team victory.
The game went for a scoreless first half as both teams had nine shots, three of them on goal. The Mustangs finished with 16 shots, six of them on goal with Hoisington and
Alli Miskowiec with three shots each. The Warriors finished with 15 shots and six of them on goal, led by Jaida Wiege with four shots.
SMSU's goalkeeper,
Amanda Haimes, finished with six saves in her fifth career shutout, while WSU's goalkeeper finished with five.
With only two games of the regular season remaining, Southwest Minnesota State will return home on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game versus Upper Iowa (3-9-4, 3-7-3 NSIC) for senior day at the Schwan Regional Event Center. SMSU will play the final game of the regular season on Friday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. hosting Sioux Falls.
