WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (4-0) went undefeated at the Dragons/Beavers Battle in the West St. Paul Dome this week in non-conference matchups.

SMSU finished the second day with a 7-6 victory over Minnesota Crookston and a 9-1 win in five innings against MSU Moorhead.

SMSU had picked up a 7-2 victory over MSU Moorhead in the season opener yesterday and finished the first day with a 3-1 win over Bemidji State.

In the first game of the day against Minnesota Crookston, UMC loaded the bases in the bottom of 1 to bring across one runner for an early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Eagles would hold this lead and advance to 3-0 in the bottom of 2, with runners all on base. SMSU fought with bases loaded to give up two runs of two hits and one error.

SMSU responded in the fourth after three consecutive singles from
Kali Tomlinson,
Lileya Kebos, and
Alex Reak.

Madison Krog came in to pinch-hit for Kaylee Van Regenmorter to hit a ground-rule double to bring in Tomlinson and Kebos.

Sara DeSmet came into to pinch run for Reak and was brought in off a fielding error in right.

The Mustangs were not finished as
Abbie Decker went to the plate to hit a three-run homer to finish the inning with a 6-3 advantage.

SMSU was able to hold the lead for a 7-4 final and would carry that momentum over in the following game against MSU Moorhead.

Bailey Johnson and Krog went for a double and triple respectively followed by singles from
Kaylee Hentges and Kebos to finish the first inning with a 5-0 lead.

SMSU opened the bottom of the third with a solo homerun from
Bailey Johnson to advance lead to 6-0. SMSU would finish the inning bringing DeSmet in off a ground out from Grote. SMSU lead 8-1 until the bottom of the fifth.

Megan Cull (2-0) earned the victory for SMSU against UMC after six innings of relief and 10 strikeouts.
Athena Golling (2-0) pitched a complete game for the victory over MSUM.

Bailey Johnson led the team hitting .700 with seven hits off 10 at bats over the four-game stretch. SMSU hit .385 as a team for an average 10 hits in the four games.
The Mustangs finished the fifth with a sac fly from Decker to score Hentges and end the game after the fifth. Â

Southwest Minnesota State travels to Florida for its spring break trip on March 9, 2019, to play four non-conference doubleheaders. Â
