TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 11 ranked St. Cloud State moved to 10-1 on the season with a 12-2 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in college baseball on Friday afternoon as part of the Tucson Invitational at the Kino Sports Complex.
SCSU opened the game's scoring in the top of the first behind a lead-off double and a two-out RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies made the score 2-0 in the third on a two-out solo home run by Matthew Meyer, before adding four more runs in the fourth to extend the margin to 6-0.
SCSU pushed across another run in the fifth before SMSU was able to score its first run of the game. The Mustangs'
Robbie Smith drilled a lead-off triple in the home half of the fifth for his first collegiate hit and came home moments later on an RBI single by
Connor Johnson.
SCSU answered with three runs in the sixth and then added two unearned runs in the eighth to push the lead to 12-1.
SMSU scored its final run in the eighth as
Ben Heichel and
Matt Bezdicek hit singles before
Jake Hendricks drilled an RBI double to make the score 12-2.
Cole Petersen (0-1) started on the mound for the Mustangs and lasted 4 2/3 innings. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
The Mustangs finished the game with nine hits.
SMSU will face Concordia-St. Paul later on Friday night with first pitch at 7:30 CST.
