MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team (7-8, 2-8 NSIC) used evenly-matched shooting efforts to overcome Minnesota State (9-5, 6-4 NSIC), 78-56, on Saturday afternoon in the R/A Facility.
The Mustangs shot 47 percent from the field (27-of-57) and 40 percent from beyond the arc (10-of-25) to ward off the Mavericks, who finished with 32 percent shooting from the field (22-of-69) and 11 percent (2-of-19) from the 3-point line.
Meleah Reinhart led the Mustangs to the victory with 18 points on the night.
Jenna Borchers added 13,
Sadie Stelter finished with 11, and
Abuk Akoi and
Madison Gehloff finished with 10. This was the first game since Jan. 5, 2019, that the Mustangs finished with five players in double-figures.
Akoi also tied the single-game record in blocks to finish with seven. This is the second time in Akoi's career she has recorded seven blocks in a game. Akoi also earned her second double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Mavericks were led by Joey Batt who finished with 11 points after going 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
The Mustangs dominated the game, only relieving the lead and allowing the Mavericks to tie the game one time each. The Mavericks only secured a one-possession lead in the first quarter before the Mustangs took control for the remainder.
The Mustangs opened the game shooting a game-high 60 percent from the field. The Mustangs never relinquished the lead in the game and extended to their largest lead of 22 points in the fourth quarter.
Southwest Minnesota State heads on the road next weekend with a road series at UMary and Minot State. The Mustangs return home on Jan. 24-25 to face Winona State and Upper Iowa.
