Evenly-contributing Mustangs push past Peacocks on Saturday

MARSHALL, Minn.
– The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team (10-9, 5-9 NSIC) never relinquished the lead to Upper Iowa (3-17, 2-11 NSIC) to secure a 76-51 victory in the R/A Facility on Saturday night.
 
The Mustangs finished the night shooting 44 percent from the field (28-of-63) and 35 percent from the 3-point line (10-of-29), while the Peacocks were restricted to 31 percent from the field (17-of-55) and 28 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-21). 
 
The combined efforts of Madison Gehloff and Sadie Stelter led the team in scoring after pouring in a team-high 14 points. Meleah Reinhart added 13 while Jenna Borchers contributed 10. Abuk Akoi grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds and was two-points shy of a double-double after recording eight points on the night. 
 
The Peacocks were led in scoring by Lexie Lodermeier who finished with 14 and Jessica Musgrave added 12. 
 
The Mustangs were the first to go on the board in the opening minutes of the first quarter, and would hold on to the lead for the remainder of regulation. 
 
The Mustangs held the Peacocks to a single-digit quarter in the first, shooting only 18 percent, to open the game with a 24-9 lead as SMSU recorded 56 percent shooting. 
 
The Mustangs used their strong start to hold on the lead even after being out-scored 18-16 by the Peacocks in the second. 
 
The Mustangs returned in the third quarter back on top, which would carry over into the final quarter when SMSU restricted UIU once again to another single-digit quarter with only allowing seven points. 
 
The Mustangs recorded a season-low eight turnovers in tonight's victory. 
 
Southwest Minnesota State continues action on the road next weekend facing Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State starting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in the Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.
