SMSU prepares for road weekend facing NSIC North Division foes UMC and BSU

    PREVIEWING THIS WEEKEND
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (10-9, 5-9 NSIC) heads on the road this weekend to face NSIC North Division opponents, Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State.
•SMSU will face Minnesota Crookston (3-15, 2-12 NSIC) on Friday night with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in Lysaker Gymnasium and will take on Bemidji State (7-11, 4-10 NSIC) on Saturday with tip-off slated for 4 p.m., in the BSU Gymnasium.
•SMSU earned the first conference winning streak to three games with the first conference weekend sweep of the 2019-20 season on Jan. 17-18, over Minot State and UMary.
•The Mustangs fell to Winona State on Friday, 74-58, after leading heading into the half, and earned a 78-56 victory over Upper Iowa on Saturday.
•This weekend is the first meeting between the two teams this season.

    SMSU QUICK HITS
•Junior guard Meleah Reinhart is leading the Mustangs in scoring with 15.6 ppg and has lead the Mustangs in scoring in nine games.
•Junior center Abuk Akoi leads the team in rebounding with 8.2 rpg. Akoi has lead the team in rebounding in eight games and earned her third double-double of the season with 14 rebounds and 10 points in the victory over Minnesota State on Jan. 11.
•Akoi tied her own school single-game record for most blocks in a single-game (seven) versus Minnesota State on Jan. 11.
•Sophomore guard Jenna Borchers has connected on a team-high 42 3-pointers and leads the team in assists with 50.
•Borchers earned a new career-high with 30 points over UMary on. Jan. 18. Borchers became the first Mustang to earn a 30-point game this season.
•Over the weekend of Jan. 17-18, SMSU had a season-high team assists (21) and free-throw percentage (8-of-8) versus Minot State, field-goal pct. (47.8) and points (91) versus UMary.
•SMSU recorded a season-low eight turnovers in the victory over UIU on Jan. 25.  
•Senior forward Caleigh Rodning has missed the last 13 games with an injury. 
•SMSU is averaging 69.8 ppg, while opponents are averaging 67.1 ppg. 
•SMSU is shooting 38 percent from the field, 33 percent from the 3-point line, and 81 percent the free-throw line and has a plus-0.2 rebounding margin.

    MUSTANGS IN THE SMSU RECORD BOOK
•Six Mustangs rank among the top 15 in several SMSU career records located on page 4.   
•Senior Caleigh Rodning ranks second in free throws made with 386 and is 23 from tying Andrea Schreier (1997-2001) for the all-time record of 409. She also ranks fourth in free throw pct. (83.6) and sixth in free throws attempts (464). Rodning is also five rebounds shy of becoming the 11th in player in team history to record 600 rebounds. 
•Junior Abuk Akoi is fourth in team history with 128 blocked shots and second in blocked shots average (1.9).
•Junior Meleah Reinhart ranks seventh in free throw pct. (79.9).
•Junior Erin Baxter ranks sixth in free-throw percentage (81.1). 
•Sophomore Jenna Borchers ranks fourth in three-point percentage (39.0).
•Junior Sadie Stelter ties Tori Fink (2007-11) at seventh in 3-point field goals made (121). Reinhart comes in at 15th with 91, while Borchers approaches at 17th with 85. Stelter also ranks 11th in free-throw percentage at 77.9.

    SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
Tom Webb is in his fourth season as head coach with a 30-70 record, including 21-59 in NSIC play. 
•SMSU finished 3-24 during his first season in 2016-17, before improving to 5-21 in 2017-18 and jumping to seven more victories last season and finishing 12-16 overall.
•Webb is 118-192 overall in his 12th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 91-123 in eight seasons as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.) 
•Webb recorded his 100th career Division II win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS MINNESOTA CROOKSTON 
•This is the 34th meeting in series history, dating back to the 1996-97 season.
•SMSU leads the all-time series 21-12 and has a 11-5 advantage of games played in Crookston. 
•SMSU has won two of the last three meetings, the last being a 78-71 victory in Marshall on Feb. 1, 2019.
•SMSU opened the series on a 12-game winning streak, before falling into two four-game losing streaks from 2008-2010 and 2013-2016.
•SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 2-1 all-time versus Minnesota Crookston.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS BEMIDJI STATE
•This is the 76th meeting in series history, dating back to 1977-78 season.
•SMSU leads the series 42-34 with SMSU earning five victories in the last eight match-ups. SMSU is 25-12 in games played in Bemidji.
•SMSU has won the last two meetings, the last being a 72-51 victory on Feb. 2, 2019, in Marshall.
•SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 2-1 all-time versus BSU.

    SCOUTING MINNESOTA CROOKSTON
•Minnesota Crookston is 3-15 overall and 2-12 NSIC. 
•UMC snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 78-76 victory over Minot State on Saturday. Prior to Saturday's victory, UMC's last victory was on Dec. 14 when the Golden Eagles earned a 66-65 victory over Wayne State.
•Junior guard Abby Guidinger is leadng the team in scoring with 10.7 ppg.
•Sophomore center Bren Fox is leadng the team in rebounding witha 7.1 rpg.
•Freshman guard Alyssa Peterson has a team-high 23 3-pointers.
•Mike Roysland is in his 14th season as head coach and holds a 126-247 overall record.
•UMC is shooting 37 percent from the field, 29 percent from 3-point range and 65 percent from the free throw line.
•UMC is averaging 61 points per game, while opponents average 75points per game. Minnesota Crookston has a minus-3.0 rebounding margin.

    SCOUTING BEMIDJI STATE
•Bemidji State is 7-11 overall and 4-10 NSIC, after dropping both match-ups last weekend versus UMary and Minot State. 
•Sophomore guard Trinity Myer leads the team in scoring at 13.7 ppg, shooting a team-high 46 percent from the field. Myer ties junior guard Brooklyn Bachmann to lead the team in rebounds with 5.5 rpg.
•Sophomore forward Claire Wolhowe has a team-high 37 3-pointers. 
•Chelsea DeVille is in her fifth season as head coach with a 31-96 overall record.
•BSU is shooting 42 percent from the field, 33 percent from 3-point range and 67 percent from the free throw line.
•BSU is averaging 65 points per game, while opponents average 66 points per game. BSU has a minus-1.3 rebounding margin.

    NCAA RANKINGS
•In the latest Division II statistics (Jan. 26), SMSU ranks third in free-throw percentage, 45th in blocked shots, 51st in free throws made, 33rd three-point field goals made.
Meleah Reinhart ranks 53rdin free-throw pct (85.9), 24th in free throws made (85).
Abuk Akoi ranks 15th in blocked shots (44) and 18th in blocked shots per game (2.32).

    NSIC RANKINGS
•In the NSIC statistics (NSIC only), SMSU leads the conference in free-throw percentage (80.9 ).
Meleah Reinhart ranks sixth in free throws made, nine in points (15.5).
Abuk Akoi leads in blocked shots while Jenna Borchers ranks fifth in three-point field goal percentage.

    REINHART NAMED NSIC SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•SMSU junior Meleah Reinhart was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week on Nov. 12. It's the first time in her career she has earned the award.
•Reinhart averaged 15 points and four rebounds in two victories during opening weekend on Nov. 8-9. She shot 44 percent from the field and was a perfect 14 of 14 from the free throw line. She scored 18 points on 5 of 7 shooting and 8 of 8 from the foul line in SMSU's win over Ouachita Baptist. 

    WEBB ANNOUNCES EARLY SIGNINGS
•Head coach Tom Webb announced on Nov. 13, that three high school standouts have signed letters of intent.
•SMSU signed Hannah Parsley, from Flandreau, S.D., Katelyn Marunich from Proctor, Minn., and Sarah Conlon from St. Peter, Minn.

    ABUK AKOI NOTES
•Has started all 19 games this season and is averaging 8.4 ppg and a team-high 8.2 rpg. 
•Leads the conference with 44 blocked shots. 
•Akoi surpassed 100 blocks and now has 128 in her career.
•Earned her third double-double on Jan. 11 with 14 rebounds and 10 points in the victory over Minnesota State.
•Earned a career-high 22 points on Dec. 21 versus USF.
•Tied program single-game record with seven blocked shots  versus UMary (2/3/18) and Minnesota State (1/11/20).

    ERIN BAXTER NOTES
•Has started 13 games this season and has appeared in all 19. She is averaging 4.8 ppg and 3.6 rpg. 
•Scored a season-high 15 points vs. UMD on Dec. 14, 2019.
•Has led the team in scoring in two games. 
•Ranks sixth in all-time history in free throw percentage (81.1)
•Led the team in steals with 39 in 2018-19. 
•Career-high five 3-pointers vs. William Jewell (11/17/18).
•Career-high 25 points at Concordia-St. Paul (1/19/18).


    TAYLOR BONESTROO NOTES
•Has played in seven games and averages 0.4 ppg.
•Connected on a 3-pointer and had one rebound vs. Presentation this season. 
•Appeared in 15 games a season ago.

    JENNA BORCHERS NOTES
•Has started all 19 games this season. 
•Averaging a team second-best 12.6 ppg. 
•Borchers became the first Mustang to record a 30-point game this season with a career-high 30 points versus UMary.
•Borchers has connected on a team-high 42 3-pointers also leads the team in assists with 50.
•Had a career-high seven assists versus WSU (1/24/20).
•Career-high five steals against UMC (2/1/19).
•Ranks fourth in career books for 3-point field goal percentage (39.0).

    EMILY BUYSSE NOTES
•Has played in 17 games and is averaging 1.0 ppg and 0.6 rpg.
•Made two 3-pointers vs. Presentation.
•Played in 26 games last season and averaged 2.3  ppg.
•Finished the 2018-19 season with 15 3-pointers. 

    OLIVIA DRUMMER NOTES 
•Has appeared in 10 games and is averaging 1.2 ppg and 0.3 rpg.
•Made a 3-pointer vs. Presentation. 
•Sat out the 2018-19 season as a redshirt. 

    MORGAN FRANK NOTES 
•Has appeared in seven games. 
•Played in 15  games and averaged 1.5 ppg and 1.1 rpg last season. 
•Scored a career-high seven points with six rebounds vs. North Central (11/20/18).

    MADISON GEHLOFF  NOTES 
•One of two true freshmen playing this season.
•Has appeared in all 19 games this season and is averaging 4.6 ppg and 2.1 rpg.
•Has led the team in scoring in two games with four games in double-figures.
•Gehloff became the fourth Mustang to earn a 20-point game with a team-high 20 points, for a career-high, versus Augie on Jan. 3.

    MATEYA HUTTON NOTES 
•Has appeared in nine games this season. 
•Tied career-high with six rebounds vs. North Central (11/20/18).
•Tied her career-high seven points twice last season. 
•Played in 24 games as a true freshman in 2017-18.

    MELEAH REINHART NOTES 
•Has started all 19 games this season.
•Averaging a team-best 15.6 ppg and averaging 4.3 rpg. 
•Reinhart is 85-of-99 from the free throw line in the 2019-20 season.
•Reinhart is the only Mustang to record double-figures in all but one of the 19 games. 
•Scored a career-high 26 points on 9 of 15 shooting at Sioux Falls (11/20/19).
•Ranks seventh in program history in free throw percentage.
•Recorded a career-high six assists versus Minot State (1/17/20) and six steals against Minnesota State (1/12/19). 
•Named NSIC South Division player of the week on Nov. 12.

CALEIGH RODNING NOTES

•Shot 86.8 percent from the free throw line in 2018-19 to rank second in team single-season history.
•Ranks second in the all-time career books in three throws made with 386.

    LILY SCHOKNECHT NOTES 
•Has appeared in 15 games and is averaging 0.6 ppg and 1.2 rpg. 
•Scored four points at Sioux Falls (11/20/19).
•Sat out the 2018-19 season as a redshirt. 

    SADIE STELTER NOTES 
•Has appeared in all 19 games with 13 starts.
•Averaging 10.8 ppg and 3.2 rpg. 
•Scored career 24 points vs. UMary for her second 20-point game this season.
•Has a team second-best 38 3-pointers.
•Started 27 games last season and led the team with 45 3-pointers.
•Tied for eighth in career books for 3-point field goals made (118).
•Ranked third on the team last season averaging 9.6 ppg. 
    
    SARA TESKE NOTES 
•Has appeared in all 19 games this season with one start. She is averaging 3.2 ppg and 4.9 rpg.
•Tied her career-high 11 points versus Concordia Portland (11/29/19).
•Scored season-high seven points at Sioux Falls (11/20/19).
•Played in 28 games with 14 starts last season, while averaging 4.1 ppg and 4.3 rpg. 
•Earned first double-double vs. Wisconsin-Parkside (11/16/18) with career-highs in both points (11) and rebounds (13).
•Career-high four steals vs. Minnesota State (12/7/18).

    SAM WALL NOTES 
•One of two true freshmen playing this season.
•Has appeared in 19 games with five starts. Wall is averaging 4.6 ppg and 1.7 rpg.
•Career-high 14 points with four 3-pointers vs. Presentation.
•Had a career-high five rebounds versus Minnesota State (1/11/20).

    SMSU PICKED NINTH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was picked to finish ninth overall and sixth in the South Division in the 16-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll. 
•MSU Moorhead was chosen as the North Division and overall favorite, while Sioux Falls was picked to win the South Division. 

    RODNING: NSIC "PLAYER TO WATCH"
•For the second consecutive season, senior forward Caleigh Rodning, was named an NSIC "Player to Watch" entering into the 2019-20 season. 
•Rodning started all games a season ago and led the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.5 ppg and 6.9 rpg.
•Rodning became the 20th player in Mustang history to reach 1,000 career points last season. 





    A LOOK BACK AT SMSU IN 2018-19 
•SMSU concluded the 2018-19 season with a 12-16 overall record and 9-13 in NSIC play.
•SMSU lost 87-57 at Minnesota Duluth in the first round of the NSIC Tournament.
•SMSU's 12 victories was the program's highest since the 2009-10 team finished with 15. 
•SMSU finished the season shooting 39 percent from the field, 33 percent from 3-point range, 76 percent from the free throw line and was minus-0.3 in rebound margin. 
•SMSU averaged 71 points per game, while opponents averaged 79 points per game. 
•The 2018-19 squad set a team single-game record with 19 3-pointers made and most three-point attempts (34) in a victory over William Jewell. 
•SMSU also earned a three-game winning streak from Nov. 16-20 and once again from Jan. 26-Feb. 2, for the program's first three-game winning streak since the 2011-12 season. 

    RODNING AND REINHART EARN ALL-NSIC IN 2018-19
•Senior Caleigh Rodning and junior Meleah Reinhart were both named second team All-NSIC last season.
•Rodning averaged a team-high 13.5 points per game and also led the squad with 6.9 rebounds per game. She finished the season shooting 39.3 percent (117 of 298) from the field and 85 percent (110 of 129) from the free throw line. 
•In NSIC play, Rodning ranked eighth in the league in free throw pct. (82.6), 15th in rebounding (6.4) and 18th in scoring (12.3).
•Reinhart averaged a team second-best 11.7 points per game last season. She finished the season shooting 42 percent (108 of 259) from the field, 42 percent from the 3-point line (43 of 102), and 82 percent from the free throw line (68 of 84). 
•In NSIC play, Reinhart ranked ninth in free throw pct (81.9), ninth in 3-point pct. (41.0), and 22nd in scoring (11.8). 



    HOME AND AWAY     
•SMSU is 3-5 at home in 2019-20 after finishing 9-5 last season. 
•SMSU is 7-4 in road/neutral site games this season after finishing 3-11 in away/neutral games last season.
