SMSU travels to Winona State and Upper Iowa in final conference road trip of the season

    PREVIEWING THIS WEEKEND
•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (13-10, 8-10 NSIC) prepares for the final road series weekend of the 2019-20 regular season traveling to South Division foes, Winona State and Upper Iowa. 
•SMSU will face Upper Iowa (3-21, 2-16 NSIC) on Friday night, with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in Dorman Gymnasium and will take on Winona State (14-8, 10-8 NSIC NSIC) on Saturday in McCown Gymnasium, with tip-off slated for 3:30 p.m.
•This weekend is the second meeting between the two teams this season. SMSU split the last time out, falling 74-58 to Winona State on Jan. 24 and defeated Upper Iowa, 76-51, on Jan. 25, both in the R/A Facility. The box scores for both games can be found on pages 22-23. 
•The Mustangs are coming off a 2-0 weekend, and extendings their winning streak to three games, with a 66-61 victory  over MSU Moorhead last Friday before earning a 74-49 victory over Northern State on Saturday.

    BROADCAST INFO 
•Both games will be broadcast on 105.1 FM KARL with Ryan Rohlik providing play-by-play.

    SMSU QUICK HITS
•With the pair of victories last weekend, SMSU surpassed last years win total. SMSU is two wins shy of tying the most wins since the 2009-10 season when they finished 15-12. 
•SMSU is one conference victory shy of tying the most conference wins from a season ago. Two more conference victories would put them at the most wins in the NSIC since the 2002-03 season when they finished 12-6 in the NSIC and 21-10 overall.
•Junior guard Meleah Reinhart is leading the Mustangs in scoring with 15.0 ppg and has led the Mustangs in scoring in 10 games. Reinhart has also recorded the most games in double-digit scoring with 21 games this season.
•Junior center Abuk Akoi leads the team in rebounding with 8.5 rpg. Akoi has led the team in rebounding in 12 games and earned her third double-double of the season with 14 rebounds and 10 points in the victory over Minnesota State on Jan. 11. Akoi is on a five-game streak for leading the team in rebounding. 
•Akoi tied her own school single-game record for most blocked shots (seven) versus Minnesota State on Jan. 11.
•Sophomore guard Jenna Borchers has connected on a team-high 55 3-pointers and leads the team in assists with 58.
•Borchers earned a career-high with 30 points over UMary on. Jan. 18. Borchers became the first Mustang to earn a 30-point game this season.
•Senior forward Caleigh Rodning has missed the last 17 games with an injury. 
•SMSU is averaging 69.1 ppg, while opponents are averaging 65.5 ppg. 
•SMSU is shooting 38 percent from the field, 33 percent from the 3-point line, and 80 percent the free-throw line and has a minus-0.2 rebounding margin.

    MUSTANGS IN THE SMSU RECORD BOOK
•Six Mustangs rank among the top 15 in several SMSU career records located on page 4.   
•Senior Caleigh Rodning ranks second in free throws made with 386 and is 23 from tying Andrea Schreier (1997-2001) for the all-time record of 409. She also ranks fourth in free throw pct. (83.6) and sixth in free throws attempts (464). Rodning is also five rebounds shy of becoming the 11th in player in team history to record 600 rebounds. 
•Junior Abuk Akoi moved to third in team history with 135 blocked shots. She is seven blocks behind Shelly Honermann (1997-01) who ranks second at 142.
•Junior Meleah Reinhart ranks seventh in free throw pct. (79.4) and 15th in 3-point field goals made (94).
•Junior Erin Baxter ranks sixth in free-throw percentage (79.7). 
•Sophomore Jenna Borchers ranks third in three-point percentage (40.3).
•Junior Sadie Stelter surpassed Tori Fink (2007-11) at seventh in 3-point field goals made as Stelter has poured in 127. Stelter also ranks 11th in free-throw percentage at 77.6.

    SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
Tom Webb is in his fourth season as head coach with a 33-71 record, including 24-60 in NSIC play. 
•SMSU finished 3-24 during his first season in 2016-17, before improving to 5-21 in 2017-18 and jumping to seven more victories last season and finishing 12-16 overall.
•Webb is 118-192 overall in his 12th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 91-123 in eight seasons as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.) 
•Webb recorded his 100th career Division II win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS UPPER IOWA 
•This is the 28th meeting in series history, dating back to 2004-05 season.
•SMSU holds a one-game advantage at 14-13, although UIU has a 7-5 advantage of games played in Fayette.
•SMSU is on a five-game winning streak which began on Dec. 1, 2017, with a 75-55 victory in Marshall. 
•SMSU has never won six games in a row versus UIU. 
•SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 6-1 all-time versus UIU.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS WINONA STATE
•This is the 85th meeting in series history, dating back to the 1973-74 season.
•SMSU leads the all-time series 44-40, but WSU has a 26-16 advantage of games played in Winona. 
•SMSU has lost the last 11 games in the series, with the last victory occurring on Jan. 17, 2014, 65-61 in Marshall.
•WSU has won 24 of the last 26 games overall since Feb. 17, 2006. 
•SMSU's last victory in Winona occurred in the 2004-05 season. 
•SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 0-7 all-time versus Winona State.

    SCOUTING UPPER IOWA
•UIU is 3-21 overall and 2-16 NSIC and are on a six-game losing streak since its last victory on Jan. 18 over Minnesota Crookston.
•Freshman guard Jessica Musgrave leads the team in scoring at 14.5 ppg, shooting a team-high 42 percent from the field. Musgrave is also recording a team-high 6.5 rpg.
•Junior guard Natalie Dinius has a team-high 41 3-pointers. 
•Nate Oakland is in his first season as head coach.
•UIU is shooting 35 percent from the field, 30 percent from 3-point range and 70 percent from the free throw line.
•UIU is averaging 57 points per game, while opponents average 72 points per game. UIU has a minus-5.5 rebounding margin.

    SCOUTING WINONA STATE
•Winona State is 14-8 overall and 10-8 NSIC. 
•The Warriors are on a four-game losing streak after falling to Minot State and UMary this past weekend.
•Junior forward Taylor Hustad is scoring 15.4 ppg with a team-high 148-of-260 (56.9) from the field. Hustad also averages a team-high 8.6 rpg.
•Junior guard Allie Pickrain has a team-high 48 3-pointers.
•Scott Ballard is in his 16th season as head coach and holds a 278-185 overall record at WSU.
•WSU is shooting 42 percent from the field, 32 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line.
•WSU is averaging 70 points per game, while opponents average 68 points per game. Winona State has a minus-0.5 rebounding margin.

    NCAA RANKINGS
•In the latest Division II statistics (Feb. 9), SMSU ranks eighth in free-throw percentage, 58th in blocked shots, 52nd in free throws made, 34th three-point field goals made.
Meleah Reinhart ranks 40th in free-throws made (94) and 60th in free throw pct. (83.9).
Abuk Akoi ranks 17th in blocked shots (51) and 20th in blocked shots per game (2.22). Akoi also ranks 56th in rebounds (196).
Jenna Borchers ranks 31st in three-point field goal pct. (42.0).

    NSIC RANKINGS
•In the NSIC statistics (NSIC only), SMSU ranks second in the conference in free-throw percentage (78.3).
Meleah Reinhart ranks seventh in free throw pct. (82.9), ninth in points (14.7).
Abuk Akoi ranks second in blocked shots (2.28) and leads the conference in rebounding (8.83).

    REINHART NAMED NSIC SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•SMSU junior Meleah Reinhart was named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week on Nov. 12. It's the first time in her career she has earned the award.
•Reinhart averaged 15 points and four rebounds in two victories during opening weekend on Nov. 8-9. She shot 44 percent from the field and was a perfect 14 of 14 from the free throw line. She scored 18 points on 5 of 7 shooting and 8 of 8 from the foul line in SMSU's win over Ouachita Baptist. 

    WEBB ANNOUNCES EARLY SIGNINGS
•Head coach Tom Webb announced on Nov. 13, that three high school standouts have signed letters of intent.
•SMSU signed Hannah Parsley, from Flandreau, S.D., Katelyn Marunich from Proctor, Minn., and Sarah Conlon from St. Peter, Minn.

    ABUK AKOI NOTES
•Akoi is one of three Mustangs to start all 23 games this season.
• She is averaging 7.7 ppg and a team-high 8.5 rpg. 
•Leads the conference in rebounding and comes in second in blocked shots per game.
•Akoi ranks third in the SMSU career-book in blocked shots (135).
•Earned her third double-double on Jan. 11 with 14 rebounds and 10 points in the victory over Minnesota State.
•Earned a career-high 22 points on Dec. 21 versus USF.
•Tied program single-game record with seven blocked shots  versus UMary (2/3/18) and Minnesota State (1/11/20).








    ERIN BAXTER NOTES
•Has started 13 games this season and has appeared in all 23. She is averaging 4.7 ppg and 3.1 rpg. 
•Scored a season-high 15 points vs. UMD on Dec. 14, 2019.
•Has led the team in scoring in two games. 
•Ranks sixth in all-time history in free throw percentage (80.5)
•Led the team in steals with 39 in 2018-19. 
•Career-high five 3-pointers vs. William Jewell (11/17/18).
•Career-high 25 points at Concordia-St. Paul (1/19/18).

    TAYLOR BONESTROO NOTES
•Has played in seven games and averages 0.4 ppg.
•Connected on a 3-pointer and had one rebound vs. Presentation this season. 
•Appeared in 15 games a season ago.

    JENNA BORCHERS NOTES
•Borchers is one of three Mustangs to start all 23 games this season.
•Averaging a team second-best 12.8 ppg. 
•Borchers became the first Mustang to record a 30-point game this season with a career-high 30 points versus UMary.
•Borchers has connected on a team-high 55 3-pointers also leads the team in assists with 58.
•Had a career-high seven assists versus WSU (1/24/20).
•Career-high five steals against UMC (2/1/19).
•Ranks fourth in career books for 3-point field goal percentage (39.4).

    EMILY BUYSSE NOTES
•Has played in 20 games and is averaging 1.0 ppg and 0.6 rpg.
•Made two 3-pointers vs. Presentation.
•Played in 26 games last season and averaged 2.3  ppg.
•Finished the 2018-19 season with 15 3-pointers. 

    OLIVIA DRUMMER NOTES 
•Has appeared in 13 games and is averaging 0.9 ppg and 0.6 rpg.
•Has a career-high five points at Minot State (1/17/20).
•Sat out the 2018-19 season as a redshirt. 

    MORGAN FRANK NOTES 
•Has appeared in nine games. 
•Played in 15  games and averaged 1.5 ppg and 1.1 rpg last season. 
•Scored a career-high seven points with six rebounds vs. North Central (11/20/18).

    MADISON GEHLOFF  NOTES 
•One of two true freshmen playing this season.
•Has appeared in all 23 games this season and is averaging 5.1 ppg and 2.5 rpg. 
•Has led the team in scoring in two games with five games in double-figures. Gehloff has led the team in assists in three games. 
•Gehloff became the fourth Mustang to earn a 20-point game with a team-high 20 points, for a career-high, versus Augie on Jan. 3.

    MATEYA HUTTON NOTES 
•Has appeared in 11 games this season. 
•Tied career-high with six rebounds vs. North Central (11/20/18).
•Tied her career-high seven points twice last season. 
•Played in 24 games as a true freshman in 2017-18.

    MELEAH REINHART NOTES 
•Reinhart is one of three Mustangs to start all 23 games this season.
•Averaging a team-best 15.0 ppg and averaging 4.1 rpg. 
•Reinhart is 94-of-115 from the free throw line in the 2019-20 season.
•Has led the team in scoring in 10 games.
•Reinhart is the only Mustang to record double-figures in all but two of the 23 games. 
•Scored a career-high 26 points on 9 of 15 shooting at Sioux Falls (11/20/19).
•Ranks seventh in program history in free throw percentage.
•Recorded a career-high six assists versus Minot State (1/17/20) and six steals against Minnesota State (1/12/19). 
•Named NSIC South Division player of the week on Nov. 12.

    CALEIGH RODNING NOTES 
•Named a 2019-20 NSIC "Player to Watch." 
•Started six games and averaged 9.3 ppg and 7.5 rpg.
•Has missed 17 games due to injury.
•Became the 20th Mustang to reach 1,000 career points on Feb. 15, 2019. 
•Named All-NSIC second team in 2018-19.
•Shot 86.8 percent from the free throw line in 2018-19 to rank second in team single-season history.
•Ranks second in the all-time career books in three throws made with 386.

    LILY SCHOKNECHT NOTES 
•Has appeared in 19 games and is averaging 0.4  ppg and 1.2 rpg. 
•Scored four points at Sioux Falls (11/20/19).
•Sat out the 2018-19 season as a redshirt. 

    SADIE STELTER NOTES 
•Has appeared in all 23 games with 17 starts.
•Averaging 10.8 ppg and 3.1 rpg. 
•Scored career 24 points vs. UMary for her second 20-point game this season.
•Has a team second-best 44 3-pointers.
•Started 27 games last season and led the team with 45 3-pointers.
•Ranks seventh in 3-pointers made (122).
•Ranked third on the team last season averaging 9.6 ppg. 
    
    SARA TESKE NOTES 
•Has appeared in all 23 games this season with one start. She is averaging 3.3 ppg and 4.7 rpg.
•Tied her career-high 11 points versus Concordia Portland (11/29/19).
•Scored season-high seven points at Sioux Falls (11/20/19).
•Played in 28 games with 14 starts last season, while averaging 4.1 ppg and 4.3 rpg. 
•Earned first double-double vs. Wisconsin-Parkside (11/16/18) with career-highs in both points (11) and rebounds (13).
•Career-high four steals vs. Minnesota State (12/7/18).

    SAM WALL NOTES 
•One of two true freshmen playing this season.
•Has appeared in 23 games with nine starts. Wall is averaging 5.0 ppg and 1.7 rpg.
•Career-high 14 points with four 3-pointers vs. Presentation.
•Had a career-high five rebounds versus Minnesota State (1/11/20).

    SMSU PICKED NINTH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•SMSU was picked to finish ninth overall and sixth in the South Division in the 16-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll. 
•MSU Moorhead was chosen as the North Division and overall favorite, while Sioux Falls was picked to win the South Division. 

    RODNING: NSIC "PLAYER TO WATCH"
•For the second consecutive season, senior forward Caleigh Rodning, was named an NSIC "Player to Watch" entering into the 2019-20 season. 
•Rodning started all games a season ago and led the team in scoring and rebounding with 13.5 ppg and 6.9 rpg.
•Rodning became the 20th player in Mustang history to reach 1,000 career points last season. 

    RODNING AND REINHART EARN ALL-NSIC IN 2018-19
•Senior Caleigh Rodning and junior Meleah Reinhart were both named second team All-NSIC last season.
•Rodning averaged a team-high 13.5 points per game and also led the squad with 6.9 rebounds per game. She finished the season shooting 39.3 percent (117 of 298) from the field and 85 percent (110 of 129) from the free throw line. 
•In NSIC play, Rodning ranked eighth in the league in free throw pct. (82.6), 15th in rebounding (6.4) and 18th in scoring (12.3).
•Reinhart averaged a team second-best 11.7 points per game last season. She finished the season shooting 42 percent (108 of 259) from the field, 42 percent from the 3-point line (43 of 102), and 82 percent from the free throw line (68 of 84). 
•In NSIC play, Reinhart ranked ninth in free throw pct (81.9), ninth in 3-point pct. (41.0), and 22nd in scoring (11.8). 

    HOME AND AWAY     
•SMSU is 5-5 at home in 2019-20 after finishing 9-5 last season. 
•SMSU is 8-5 in road/neutral site games this season after finishing 3-11 in away/neutral games last season.
