OWATONNA, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team earned its first victory of the season on Sunday morning defeating Minnesota Crookston 7-0 at the West Hills Tennis Center.
SMSU improves to 1-5 overall with the win and also gives first-year head coach
Jon Parker his first win at Mustang head coach.
The Mustangs earned the doubles point as
Cora Delich and
Paige Janka won by a 6-2 score at No. 1, while
Taylor Bonestroo and
Cara Berkner combined to pick up a 6-0 win at No. 2. UMC forfeited the the No. 3 doubles match.
In singles play, Delich earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1, with Janka picking up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2.
Hanna Himmelman won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, while
Rachel Steffen earned a 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory at No. 4 for her first collegiate win. Bonestroo also collected her first collegiate victory winning by scores of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
Southwest Minnesota State returns to the court next weekend with two NSIC matches. The Mustangs face Augustana on Saturday, Feb. 29, in St. Peter, before taking on Sioux Falls on Sunday, March 1, in Owatonna.
