Message from SMSU Director of Athletics, Chris Hmielewski (Aug. 14)
The SMSU Department of Athletics coaches and staff members are deeply committed to our student-athletes and their collegiate experience at SMSU. Our thoughts and support are with our student-athletes who will not have the opportunity to compete this Fall, but we understand and respect NCAA Division II and the NSIC's decisions in response to COVID-19 and prioritizing the health and safety of all stakeholders at SMSU.

Moving forward, our focus will be on supporting our student-athletes experience by helping them navigate the current challenges and decision making, providing them comprehensive educational opportunities, and continuing their growth through training, skill development, team meetings, and practices during Fall semester.

Message from SMSU Director of Athletics, Chris Hmielewski (March 15)
We are working hard in these challenging and rapidly changes times to provide our coaches, staff members, and our student-athletes and their families with updates as we learn of the changes that are impacting how we are operating as a University and a NCAA Division II Department of Athletics. This has not been easy communicating these unprecedented decisions to our student-athletes, coaches and supporters of Mustang Athletics.

We will continue to work with and take direction from the decision makers of the NCAA, NSIC, SMSU, Minnesota State System and other state agencies to determine our next steps that will be communicated to us on a day-by-day basis. We are very thankful for the leadership that has been provided and the decisions that are protecting the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, family members and fans of our athletic teams.

On Friday, March 13, the NCAA DII leadership provided us with emergency legislation that addresses many of the questions our student-athletes and family members may have about eligibility moving forward and number of other changes to regulations and policies that will help guide our coaches and administrators moving forward. We are committed to our student-athletes and their academic and athletic experience, and we will continue to provide all our stakeholders with updates on this very fluid situation.
