SMSU women’s basketball returns home facing Concordia-St. Paul this Saturday and Sunday

THIS WEEKEND 

•The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (5-1, 3-1 NSIC) will return home this Saturday and Sunday with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games taking on Concordia-St. Paul (6-2, 4-2 NSIC) in Marshall. 

•Saturday's game will begin at 4 p.m., while Sunday's match-up will start at 1 p.m. in the R/A Facility.

•The games were originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but were delayed one day for COVID-19 protocols.

•Both games will be broadcast on 105.1 FM?KARL with Ryan Rohlik

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL 

•SMSU and CSP meet for the 59th and 60th time with CSP leading 42-16  in a series started in 1974-75.

•CSP leads the series 17-8 in games played in Marshall, including winning 68-51 last season.

•SMSU has lost 17 straight to CSP and has won only twice in the previous 40 match-ups since 2002-03. 

•SMSU's last win was on Dec. 10, 2011, (60-55) in the R/A Facility. 

•SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 0-8 all-time versus Concordia-St. Paul.

    SMSU?HEAD COACH TOM?WEBB

Tom Webb is in his fifth season as head coach with a 41-74 record, including 30-62 in NSIC play. 

•Webb is 132-197 overall in his 13th season as?head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 91-123 in eight seasons (2008-16) as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.). 

•SMSU has improved its victory total each season since Webb took over prior to the 2016-17 season.

•SMSU's 16 victories last season was the program's most since recording 19 during the 2004-05 season.  

•Webb recorded his 100th career Division II?win against Wisconsin-Parkside (91-83) on Nov. 16, 2018.

    ABOUT SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE

• SMSU returned to action last Friday and Saturday continuing NSIC South Division play splitting the series against MSU with a 75-66 victory on Friday and a 68-61 loss on Saturday. It was SMSU's first road conference games of the 2020-21 season. 

• In last Friday's win, Meleah Reinhart scored 18 points and connected on 5 of 12 shooting.  Sadie Stelter shooting 17 points, Abuk Akoi with 16 points, and Jenna Borchers with 12 points. 

•SMSU limited MSU to 29 percent shooting and held them to just five points in the second quarter.

•In Sunday's game, SMSU turned the ball over a season high 26 times, allowing a 20-7 points off turnover scoring advantage for MSU.

Reinhart led SMSU in scoring on Sunday with 22 points, while Borchers added 12 points. Akoi earned her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and also tied her single game block record for the third time in her career with seven.

•For the season, SMSU is shooting 40 percent from the field, 30 percent from 3-point range, 76 percent from the free throw line with Stelter ranking first nationally in free-throw percentage going 23 of 23 so far this season. SMSU is also a plus-7.8 in rebound margin. SMSU is averaging 70 points per game, while opponents average 56 ppg.

    SMSU IN THE NCAA & NSIC WEEKLY STATISTICS

•In the latest NCAA statistics (Jan. 26), SMSU ranks first in defensive rebounds (36.7), fifth in 3-point field goal pct. defense (22.1), 13th in field goal pct. defense (32.9), 13th in blocked shots (4.7) and 15th in scoring defense.

•Senior Sadie Stelter ranks first in the country (three-way tie) in free-throw pct. (100.0), senior Abuk Akoi ranks ninth in blocked shots per game (2.8) and junior Jenna Borchers ranks 35th in 3-point field goals per game (2.67). 

•The latest NCAA statistics can be found on page 19, while this week's NSIC stats are on page 17-18.

      REINHART EARNS 1,000 CAREER POINTS

•Senior Meleah Reinhart reached 1,000 career points in Friday night's game late in the third quarter on a free throw, becoming the 21st player in team history to reach 1,000 career points. Reinhart finished the weekend with 1,025 points in 86 games.

    MUSTANGS IN THE SMSU RECORD BOOK

•Six Mustangs are ranked among the top 15 in several SMSU career records, which are located on page 4.   

•Senior Caleigh Rodning ranks second in free throws made with 389 and is 20 from tying Andrea Schreier (1997-2001) for the all-time record of 409. She also ranks fourth in free throw pct. (83.1), sixth in free throws attempts (468) and eighth with 657 rebounds.

•Senior Abuk Akoi ranks second in team history with 158 blocked shots.

•Senior Meleah Reinhart ranks sixth in free throw pct. (79.6) and is 18th in scoring with 1025 points.

•Senior Erin Baxter ranks ninth in free-throw percentage (78.8).

•Junior Jenna Borchers ranks third in three-point percentage (40.8) and eighth in three-point field goals (131).

•Senior Sadie Stelter ranks fourth in 3-point field goals made (147) and ranks seventh in free-throw percentage (80.1).

NEW LOOK NSIC SCHEDULE AND POSTSEASON  

•Each NSIC team was scheduled to have 16 regular season games with 14 conference games versus teams within their division.

•The NSIC Sanford Tournament has been reduced to an eight-team tournament with the top four teams in each division advancing to the tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.  

    SCOUTING CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL

•Concordia-St. Paul, is 6-2 overall, 4-2 NSIC, following a split of home games last weekend versus USF. CSP lost the opener on Friday, 83-65, but bounced back with a 64-50 win on Saturday.

•Senior guard Riley Wheatcraft is the leading scorer for CSP averaging 15 ppg.

•Freshmen forward Lindsey Becher, is the second leading scorer at 13 ppg to go along with 25 blocked shots.  

•CSP is shooting 46 percent from the field, 43 percent from 3-point range, 70 percent from the free throw line and is negative-1 in rebound margin. CSP is averaging 76 points per game, while opponents are averaging 63 ppg.

•Head coach Amanda Johnson is in her sixth season with a record of 83-61.  

    SMSU PICKED 5TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL

•SMSU was picked to finish tied for fifth in the South Division in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll. 

•SMSU?senior guard Meleah Reinhart was named a "Player to Watch".

•Minnesota State was chosen as the South Division favorite, followed by Augustana, Winona State and Sioux Falls State rounding out the top four.

•Has started all six games and is averaging 9.3 ppg and 6.7 rpg.

•Season-high 11 points on four field goals vs. Minnesota State (1/23/21).

•Ranks second in team history with 158  blocked shots.

•One of three Mustangs to start all 28 games last season.

    JENNA BORCHERS NOTES

•Has started all six games and is averaging 11.8 ppg and 3.7 rpg.

•Leads the team with 16 3-pointers.

•Season-high 15 points vs. Minot State (1/3/21).

•One of three Mustangs to start all 28 games last season.

•Connected on a team-high 72 3-pointers also led the team with 77 assists.

•Led the NSIC last year in 3-point field goal pct. (44.2).

•Scored a career-high 30 points at UMary (1/28/20).

•Ranks third in team history in 3-point field goal percentage (40.8).

•Her 72 3-pointers in 2019-20 was one shy of team single-season record.

•Shot 85.3 percent from the free throw line in 2018-19 ranking third in team single-season history.

    LILY SCHOKNECHT NOTES 

•Has played in all six games this season and has grabbed eight rebounds.

•Had three blocked shots vs. Upper Iowa (1/6/21).

•Played in 24 games last season and averaged 0.5 ppg and 1.2 rpg.

•Scored five points at Winona State (02/15/20).

    SADIE STELTER NOTES 

•Has appeared in all six games and is averaging 12.8 ppg with eight 3-pointers.

•Scored 18 points vs. Minot State (1/2/21) and 18 points vs. Upper Iowa (1/16/21).  

•Ranks fourth in team history in 3-pointers made (147) and is seventh in free throw pct. (80.1).

    SAM?WALL NOTES 

•Has started all six games this season and is averaging 3.0 ppg and 1.9 rpg.

    REINHART & AKOI EARN 2019-20 ALL-NSIC HONORS  

•Senior Meleah Reinhart was named second team All-NSIC for the second straight season in 2019-20. 

•In NSIC play, Reinhart ranked eighth in the league in free throw pct. and 11th in scoring.

•Senior Abuk Akoi was named to the NSIC All-Defensive team as she led the league in blocked shots and finished second in rebounding.  

    WORKING OVERTIME 

•SMSU is 11-27 all-time in overtime games, including finishing 1-1 last season. SMSU lost at Concordia-St. Paul, but won at UMary.  

•SMSU is 3-4 in double overtime games and has never played into triple overtime.

    HOME AND AWAY     

•SMSU is 4-0 at home this season after finishing 7-5 last season and 9-5 in 2018-19.

•SMSU is 1-1 in road games this season after finishing 9-7 in road/neutral site games last season.

•The 2020-21 campaign marks the 42nd season SMSU has competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
