MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team opened homecoming weekend suffering a 3-2 loss to Wayne State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Friday afternoon at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
SMSU opened the game's scoring in the opening half, but WSC rallied with three straight goals and held off a late Mustang charge to earn the victory.
SMSU drops to 2-6-1 overall, 1-5-1 NSIC, while WSC improves to 3-6-1 overall, 3-4 NSIC. All six of SMSU's losses have been by one goal.
The Mustangs opened the game's scoring in the 13
th minute as
Alex Lotts buried her third goal of the season off an assist from
Katie Oatman.
SMSU would maintain the lead until the 27
th minute when WSC's Madison Kemp scored her third goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
The score would remain tied into the second half before the Wildcats' Chloe Schlines scored an unassisted goal to make the score 2-1. WSC added to the lead in the 77
th minute with Kylee Delaney scoring off a corner-kick from Payton Haliburton.
SMSU wouldn't go away and cut the lead to 3-2 in the 87
th minute with
Kirsten Wetterstrom scoring her second of the season off a pass from Lotts.
WSC closed the game with 11 shots, including seven on goal, while SMSU finished collecting 10 shots with four on goal.

Meghan Harkin finished the 90 minutes with four saves.
Southwest Minnesota State closes the weekend hosting Augustana on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
