Jake Phipps recorded his second consecutive double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds while
Dunwa Omot came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points to help the Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team collect a 73-63 victory over Davenport University (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon inside De Simone Gymnasium. The game was part of the Haribo Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
SMSU, which trailed 36-28 at halftime, rallied to win its third straight game and improves to 3-1 overall. DU drops to 2-2 overall after suffering losses to Upper Iowa and SMSU this weekend.
Phipps recorded his second straight double-double and scored 20 points for the second time in his career. He closed the game making 9 of 13 shots with a pair of 3-pointers, while also adding three steals, three assists and two blocked shots.
Following a first half in which he attempted just one shot, Omot had a huge second half, closing the game making 5 of 6 field goals, including a perfect 4 of 4 from 3-point range.
Kenny Byers also reached double figure scoring with 14 points, while adding eight assists and six rebounds.
Cliff McCray chipped in with nine points and pulled down seven rebounds to help the SMSU cause.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 43 percent (26 of 60) from the field, while making 7 of 26 from 3-point range. The Panthers ended the afternoon shooting 46 percent (27 of 59) which included four 3-pointers. SMSU held a 38-26 rebound edge and held a 13-8 advantage in second-chance scoring.
SMSU trailed for more than 14 minutes in the opening half, including falling behind by a score of 32-21 with 2:41 remaining.
Despite trailing by eight at halftime, SMSU stormed out of the gate in the second half scoring the first nine points, capped off by four straight points by Byers, to take a 37-36 lead.
SMSU held a one-point lead with 14 minutes remaining before Omot took over and connected on a 3-pointer, a field goal, and a pair of free throws to extend the advantage to 52-45.
The lead would reach double figures for the first time in the game with five minutes remaining as
Grant Kramer hit a jumper to push the lead to 63-53. The lead would dip to five points with three minutes left, but a layup by Kramer and a 3-pointer by Phipps sealed the victory.
Davenport was led in scoring by Jairus Stevens, who made 8 of 10 field goals for 16 points.
Southwest Minnesota State continues road play on Tuesday night opening NSIC play at the University of Sioux Falls starting at 7:30 p.m.
