Mustangs ride depth to victory against Winona State

MARSHALL, Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team (6-2 overall, 3-1 NSIC) took advantage of turnovers and rode their depth to a 69-65 victory over Winona State (4-4, 1-3) in an NSIC clash inside the R/A Facility on Friday night.

Although each team would commit 13 turnovers on the night, SMSU would take advantage of their extra possessions, outscoring WSU 25-14 off of turnovers. The key for the Mustangs all season has been their depth, and it wouldn't stop tonight, as they would play 11 different players, with 10 scoring a point, and would outscore the Warriors' bench 28-9 en route to victory.

Sam Wall would lead a strong second unit, scoring 11 points on 66.7 percent shooting (4-of-6), and 60 percent shooting behind the arc (3-of-5) in just 13 minutes. She also would add five rebounds while collecting a steal.

For the second consecutive game, the Mustangs made 11 three pointers on 37.9 percent shooting, while shooting 41.8 percent from the field (23-of-55). The Warriors would shoot 38.7 percent from field (24-of-62), but would stay in the game thanks to a 42.3 percent clip from range (11-of-26).

SMSU had four players in double figures and nine players record a rebound. Wall would be joined by Meleah Reinhart, who led the team offensively, tallying 12 points and five rebounds while making all six of her free throw attempts. Jenna Borchers and Sadie Stelter each added 10 points while collecting four and six rebounds, respectively. Abuk Akoi filled the stat sheet for the Mustangs, tallying eight points, four rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.

Winona State would open the game making six of eight shots to double up SMSU 14-7 into the media timeout. The bench would check in at the break and go on a run, going on an 8-2 run led by five points from Wall and a three pointer by Hannah Parsley to close the gap to 16-15. Winona State would answer with a 6-0 run of their own to stretch the lead to 22-15 and take a 22-16 lead into the second quarter.

The teams would split the next 24 points to keep the WSU lead at six points with 4:45 left in the first half, but a 9-3 run that would see four separate scorers for the Mustangs would help close the half and go into the locker room with a 37-37 tie. Wall would lead the team in scoring with eight first half points, with Stelter adding seven and Borchers scoring six.

A Stelter three-pointer would be the only points in the first 3:49 of the second half, as the teams would shoot a combined 1 for 11 before a WSU layup at the 6:10 mark to cut the SMSU lead to 40-39. That would jumpstart an 8-2 WSU run before an Akoi three pointer halted the run before leading to an 11-3 Mustang run to close the quarter leading 53-48.

SMSU would hold the lead the rest of the way, opening the fourth quarter on a 9-5 run to grow the lead to nine. WSU's outside shooting would keep them in the game, connecting on 3 of 6 three pointers in the final five minutes of the game, but SMSU would go a perfect 4 of 4 from the free throw line to hold off any chance of a big WSU rally.

WSU was led by Lindsey Hahn, who led all scorers with 20 points, and Emma Fee, who picked up a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mustangs are back in the R/A Facility Saturday night, hosting Upper Iowa at 5:30 p.m.
