WAYNE, Neb.- The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team (4-2 overall, 1-1 NSIC) was outscored 7-0 in the final 1:34 of overtime, falling on the road against Wayne State (5-1, 2-0) 69-65 at the Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Neb.
After leading 28-25 at the half, SMSU would be outscored 27-18 in the third quarter to trail by six before outscoring the Wildcats 15-9 to send the game into overtime. The Mustangs would hold a three-point lead, but the late WSC run would doom SMSU.
The Mustangs shot 32.3 percent from the field (21-of-65) and 4.8 percent on three-pointers (1-of-21), while the Wildcats shot 36.8 percent from the field (21-of-57) and 35.0 percent (7-of-20) on three-pointers.
Sadie Stelter led the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds, tying a career high in rebounds while recording her second double-double of the season.
Abuk Akoi picked up 12 points and 7 rebounds, with
Madison Gehloff scoring a season-high 11 points and collecting five rebounds.
SMSU shot 2-12 from the field in the first quarter while WSC shot 6-14 to lead 17-12 into the second quarter. Gehloff would open the second quarter scoring with a layup off a feed from Stelter to ignite a 10-0 Mustang run to take a 22-17 lead with 4:52 left in the first half.
WSC would hit a three-pointer to end the run, but the next four points would go to SMSU after a pair of Borchers free throws and
Bri Stoltzman layup to go up 26-20. The Wildcats would go on a 5-0 run to trail 26-25 with 1:24 to go in the half, but Akoi would end the half with a bucket to give SMSU their first halftime lead of the season at 28-25.
After a 4-0 WSC run to take a lead to open the second half, the Mustangs would respond with a 7-1 run to lead 35-30. WSC would answer with a 15-4 run of their own to jump ahead 45-39 with 2:44 to go in the third quarter.
Stelter would score five points in the final 1:16 of the quarter, but a layup in between Stelter baskets and a half court buzzer beater by the Wildcats would give WSC a 52-46 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs would score the first seven points of the final frame to take a 53-52 lead, with four points by Akoi leading the way. WSC would go down the next possession and hit a three-pointer to take the lead back at 55-53.
Following a Stelter and-one to narrow the WSC lead to 57-56, the Wildcats would score on a pair of layups to go up 61-56 with 3:56 to go. There wouldn't be another basket until the 2:10 mark, when Akoi would cash in on an and-one to close the gap to 61-59.
Gehloff would make a layup to tie things at 61-61 with 1:09 left, And Stelter would collect a rebound with 33 seconds left to give SMSU the ball as coach
Tom Webb would call a timeout. Each team would have a chance to take a lead, but neither could cash in, sending the game to overtime.
Gehloff would open the scoring with a layup before a Borchers free throw to take a 64-61 lead. The next four points would be scored at the free throw line, three for WSC and one for SMSU, but WSC would connect on a three to take a 67-65 lead with 25 seconds to go. WSC would close the game with a pair of free throws.
WSC would be led by Kylie Hammer, whose 26 points on 8 of 14 shooting would lead all scorers
The Mustangs are back home Saturday, hosting the Vikings of Augustana at 5::30 p.m. inside the R/A Facility.
