WEST FARGO, N.D. – The final day of the 2021 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championship wrapped-up on Saturday night with Southwest Minnesota State's
Natalie Bohnert earning a third place finish in the 200-yard backstroke and earning All-NSIC honors for the second straight day.
SMSU recorded 43 points on Saturday and finished the championships in eighth place with a total of 150 points at the nine-team championship. The four-day championship was hosted by MSU Moorhead at the Hulbert Aquatic Center.
Minnesota State won the team championship with 1,033.5 points, while St. Cloud State finished in second place with 858.5 points.
SMSU is in its second season of intercollegiate swimming since the program was started in 2018. The Mustangs finished eighth at the 2020 NSIC Championship with 106 points.
Bohnert, who earned All-NSIC honors in the 100-yard backstroke on Friday for the second straight season, advanced to the 'A' finals of the 200-yard backstroke with the third fastest time at 2:03.82 in the morning prelims. Bohnert finished with a time of 2:03.51 in the finals to earn SMSU 16 points. It's the second straight season Bohnert has earned All-NSIC accolades in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke.
SMSU's
Maija Geier finished 11th in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.79 to earn six team points, while
Abbie Christensen placed 16th in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:12.50 to register one team point.
Kendyl Near touched the wall at 1:01.79 in the 100-yard IM to place 11
th and earn SMSU six points.
Annika Freiburger competed in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing 20th at 2:33.88, while teammates
Gabriela Reis (2:34.73) and Near (2:35.91) finished 22
nd and 23
rd respectively.
Freiburger also swam in the 1,650-yard freestyle and notched seven team points with a 10
th place time of 18:50.87.
Emma Polchow picked up one team point for the Mustangs in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 20:18.88.
SMSU's 400-yard freestyle relay team also picked up points on Saturday night with Reis, Christensen,
Megan Anspach and Near placing 15
th at 3:47.67, while
Ellie Anselment,
Jackie Wisinski,
Sarynn Patterson and Polchow finished in 16
th at 4:09.89.
The top three finalists in each individual event and top two finalists in each relay event will be recognized as NSIC All-Conference during the meet.
