SMSU defeats MSU to remain undefeated in NSIC play but falls to GAC

ST. PETER, Minn. –
The Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team returned to the win column on Sunday afternoon and remained undefeated in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with a 7-0 victory over Minnesota State at the Swanson Tennis Center. Later in the day, SMSU stepped out of conference play and lost a tough 6-3 non-conference match to Division III traditional power Gustavus Adolphus.
 
In the victory over MSU, SMSU earned the doubles point winning all three matches as Courtenay Leonard and Maja Louisa Harck won 6-2 at No. 1, Cora Delich and Gwendolen Sior picked up a 6-1 win at No. 2, while Maegan Flight and Silvia Poulakidas earned a 6-0 victory at No. 3.
 
The Mustangs won all six singles matches in straight sets. Flight cruised at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory; Leonard won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2; Delich picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3; Sior won at No. 4 by scores of 6-0, 7-5; Harck earned a 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5, while Poulakidas won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6.
 
SMSU and Gustavus played a tight match with the Gusties winning three singles matches via tiebreaker and winning two tightly contested doubles matches.
 
In doubles play, Leonard and Flight teamed up and lost tough battle, 8-7 at No. 1, while Delich and Poulakidas lost at No. 3 by an 8-3 score. SMSU's No. 2 team of Harck and Sior won their match by an 8-5 score to earn one team point. The match was scored with each doubles match counting as a team point.
 
In singles play, Flight won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, at No. 1, while Leonard captured the other team point for the Mustangs at No. 2, winning 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5). Sior lost a tight match at No. 3 by scores of 6-4, 2-6, 0-1 (3-10), Harck lost in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 0-1 (8-10) at No. 5 and Poulakidas also dropped a heartbreaker at No. 6, 6-4, 1-6, 0-1 (1-10).
 
Southwest Minnesota State returns to conference play next Saturday with two matches in Winona, Minn., versus Upper Iowa and Winona State.
