Mustang tennis ends successful season with loss in tournament semifinals

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
The No. 5 seeded Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team had its season come to an end on Saturday morning losing to No. 1 seed Augustana University, 4-0, in the semifinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament inside Huether Family Match Pointe.
 
SMSU had one of its most successful seasons in nearly 15 years, closing with a 9-8 overall record, including 8-3 in NSIC play. The third-place regular season finish was the program's highest since 2008, while the semifinal appearance in the league tournament was its first since the 2009 season. SMSU's winning record was just its third since the 1998 season.
 
Augustana, which has won the past nine NSIC Tournament championships, won the doubles point winning at No. 2 and No. 3, while No. 1 was unfinished with AU leading 5-2. SMSU's Gwendolen Sior and Cora Delich lost 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, while SMSU's No. 3 team of Maja Louisa Harck and Silvia Poulakidas lost by a score of 6-3.
 
In singles action, SMSU's Maegan Flight lost 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, Courtenay Leonard lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, while Harck dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match at No. 3. There were no results for matches at No. 4, 5 and 6.
 
Flight led the team with 11 victories with all coming at the No. 1 slot. Harck had a winning singles record at 9-6, Leonard finished 8-9, Delich recorded a 7-9 mark, while Sior and Poulakidas each racked up six singles wins.
 
Leonard had a team-high nine victories in doubles play with Flight, Harck and Sior each finishing with seven wins.
