SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team (1-0) kicked off its 2021 season with a bang, taking a 1-0 shutout victory over Black Hills State (0-1) at Ronnie Theisz Field.
The victory is their sixth season opening win in program history, and second in as many seasons. It is also the second consecutive year beating BHSU to open their season.
The game played to a draw until SMSU's
Alex Lotts' unassisted goal in the 79
th minute. This was Lotts' seventh goal of her career. She finished tied for second on the team with three shots.
SMSU out-shot Black Hills State 14-9 with
Kirsten Wetterstrom recording four shots, with Lotts,
Abbey Hoisington, and
Selena Prolic all tallying three shots.
Meghan Harkin played all 90-minutes between the posts, recording a shutout in her first career game, tallying two saves in the process.
Southwest Minnesota State returns home to face Missouri Western State in its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. at Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
