DULUTH, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs women's basketball team (9-8 overall, 6-7 NSIC) would get outscored 24-10 in the second quarter to lead the University of Minnesota Duluth (15-4, 13-2) to a 65-49 victory on Friday night in the Romano Gymnasium.
The Mustangs shot 31.6 percent from the field (18-of-57) and 26.3 percent from the three-point line (5-of-19), while the Bulldogs shot 45.6 percent from the field (26-of-57) and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from beyond the arc.
SMSU would have six scorers with at least five points, with
Meleah Reinhart leading the charge. She would score 10 points while starting her program record 109
th career game.
Sadie Stelter would lead the team with six rebounds while adding 10 points.
Jenna Borchers would lead the distribution, collecting three assists and adding six points.
UMD was led by Brooke Olson, who would score a team-high 18 points while tying the team lead with nine rebounds in the victory.
Borchers would get the scoring started, getting inside and finishing a layup to take a 2-0 lead in the first minute and a half of action. UMD would score right back to tie the game, but SMSU would answer with a 7-0 run, capped off by a
Sam Wall 3-pointer from NBA range to race to a 9-2 lead.
Following the Wall three, UMD would come right down and connect on a layup to end the spurt. UMD would march right back, cutting SMSU's lead to 10-9, but Borchers and Wall would each hit from deep to give the Mustangs a 16-9 lead before a UMD layup in the final minute to make it a 16-11 game as time expired in the first quarter.
The Mustangs would show no signs of slowing down, With Stelter scoring five straight points to grow their lead to double digits at 21-11. UMD would march right back, rattling off a 14-1 run to take a 25-22 lead with 3:21 to go in the half.
After a
Madison Gehloff jumper to cut the UMD lead to 25-24 with 3:02 to go and try and extinguish the UMD fire, the Bulldog barrage would only continue, closing the half on a 10-2 run to take a 35-26 lead into the locker room.
UMD would pick up right where they left off, drilling a three to open the scoring on their first possession. After three scoreless minutes,
Lily Schoknecht would hit a three-pointer to even the second half scoring, her third make in as many attempts this season.
After a pair of UMD free throws and a Schoknecht jumper, the Bulldogs would score seven straight points to take control at 49-31 with 3:02 to go in the third quarter. SMSU would score four of the final six points in the quarter, trailing UMD 51-35 after three quarters.
UMD would add to their lead early, scoring four of the first five points of the fourth quarter to take a 55-36 lead with 7:38 to go in the game. SMSU attempt to mount a comeback, scoring four points in a 30 second span to cut the UMD lead to 55-40 with 6:08 to go.
UMD would close the game scoring 10 of 19 points to bring us to our final score.
SMSU finishes cross-division action on Saturday, Jan. 29 at St. Cloud State. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
