Hoisington, Mustangs end season on high note, defeat USF

MARSHALL, Minn. - Led by a pair of goals from Abbey Hoisington in her final game as a Mustang, the Southwest Minnesota State soccer team defeated Sioux Falls 3-2 in its season finale on Thursday evening at The Schwan Regional Event Center.

It was the third multi-goal game, and first since last season for Hoisington, who finishes with 16 career goals.

The Mustangs struck first as Hoisington netted the opener in the 22nd minute, burying a penalty kick into the bottom right corner for her first goal of the season, giving SMSU a 1-0 lead that held through the halftime break.

It was Hoisington, again, who would find the back of the net to open the second half scoring, crashing the net to finish a shot from Erin Wetterstrom that was deflected off the crossbar by the goalkeeper, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.

Sioux Falls answered, scoring a pair of goals just over two minutes apart from each other, but Kirsten Wetterstrom had enough, sending a screamer past the goalie in the 75th minute, giving SMSU a 3-2 lead that would turn out to be the game winner.

SMSU outshot USF 14-13 on the night, with the Mustangs sending nine on net to the Cougars' seven.

Julianne Arballo closed out the season with four saves in net. Hoisington and Wetterstrom led the team with three shots, as they, along with Jessica Jugovich, Haley Mason, Erin Wetterstrom, and Kylie Birath each put a shot on net.

Alex Lotts ended the season leading the Mustangs in scoring with seven goals and two assists. She tied K. Wetterstrom, Hoisington, Mason, Katie Oatman, Emma Dahnert, and E. Wetterstrom with a team-best two assists.

Thursday night marked the final match in the Mustang career of five seniors; Lotts, Jugovich, Oatman, Hoisington, and Hayleigh Young.
